He took the push for making Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a holiday to the people with his R&B hit, "Happy Birthday."More recently, Mavis Staples teamed up with Ry Cooder to morph civil rights anthems into laid-back funk tracks reminiscent of the classic tunes she recorded with the Staples Singers.
