First there was Jews for Jesus. Now, there's Hookers for Jesus. That Jesus...he sure is a likable guy! The Las Vegas-based non-profit organization was founded in 2005 by Annie Lobért, a former prostitute. Lobért tries to provide sex workers with the financial and emotional support they need to get off the streets.
Whatever you think about Hookers for Jesus (after all, some say Jesus had sex with Mary Magdalene, a hooker herself), the organization makes a good portion of their money from the sales of "Hookers for Jesus" T-shirts. While such a shirt may not be a great Valentine's Day gift for a woman, it is perhaps the funniest top a man could ever wear in public.

Mary Magdalene was NOT a hooker. This is a misunderstanding put forth by people confusing Mary Magdalene with the woman "taken in adultery" (who wasn't a hooker, either, but, rather, simply a woman who was found alone with an unrelated man). Pope Gregory III of the Roman Church made this mistake in a sermon, and the Roman Catholic Church kept on making it until recently, when they corrected this impression. We who are Orthodox Christians have NEVER identified St. Mary Magdalene, who is seen as the second greatest female Saint of the Church, second only to the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, as a prostitute. We have always known that she was a wealthy woman and well-known to the Roman Emperor. And only a few idiots who know nothing about history think she had sex with Jesus. This slander didn't even appear until the 12th Century in what amounted to pornography of the time.

As a nonprofit organization, Hookers for Jesus actually relies on donations and grants for financial support. Sales of t-shirts only accounts for about two percent of our financial base. Now, come a buy a t-shirt for YOURSELF for Valentines! Women actually LOVE these shirts!

You need to get your theology straight. Mary Magdalene wasn't a hooker; she was, in fact, a disciple.
Pope Gregory made the whole thing up -- probably, to discredit her and, thus, continue to denigrate the role of women in the Church. The Vatican long since renounced that silly fabrication. Biblical texts, in fact, support the important role Mary Magdalene played in Jesus of Nazareth's inner circle. In some ways, she was closest to him.
Now, whether he had sex with her is something else again. I happen to believe he probably did -- and offspring as well -- but that's another matter.
But, no. Mary Magdalene definitely was NOT a 'woman of the night.'

I find it funny people think they can seriously debate this woman's occupation 2000 years after the fact, based on one of the most molested (mostly by European monks, bet they weren't biased) and inaccurate documents in history, the bible. Even if she wasn't a whore, everyone perceives her as a whore, except the davinci code crowd and xtian apologists, so the reference is legitimate. She is known as a whore, so therefore her name being used in this "hooker tank top with a jesus fish" article is totally legitimate. christians and all the other faithful are disgusting to those of us who think for ourselves and reject the ancient lies of our ancestors. The only way to get a Las Vegas whore to quit laying on her back? Well it isn't jesus, it would be in the form of MONEY. So maybe a bucket full of nickels would help? Just use what is in the offering plate, but I think the whores today charge a bit more than scary mary magdalene.

Thank you John for being enlightened enough to know the correct information. Glad so many other people wrote in to correct the LIE handed down regarding the misconception that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. SHE WAS A FAVORED DISCIPLE. An official apology was issued by the Vatican in the 60's for exacerbating this fallacy. The manipulation of information by the medieval church in the hands of the some gave us a legacy of a woman hating, dis-empowering, war mongering world. Lets all strive to correct this.

Leave it to the religious zealots to preach. Who cares? They make saints out of anyone and everyone. The title is worthless. The story is about a charitable cause. Keep your preaching to yourself because nobody, and I do mean nobody, cares about your zealotry or piety. The Roman Catholic church should apologize for even existing, never mind calling some woman a hooker.
