Oscar night was supposed to be full of pride for Damiani jewelers. The bosses were in Hollywood for the show. Many of their top designs were on display on the arms and necks of the film industry's elite. Tilda Swinton, who won the award for Best Supporting Actress, accepted her statue wearing a Damiani diamond bracelet. But thousands of miles away in Milan, thieves were in the process of a brazen heist in which they tunneled into the store from a construction site next door, tied up employees, and emptied the joint of $20 million in gems.
The robbery had reportedly been in the works since Christmas, when the thieves took advantage of a building-construction site behind the showroom.
OK, by picking such a momentous night, the robbers nailed the store at a weak moment. You could either say it was brilliant planning or a prick move.

LOVE this -- very clever thinking on the thieves' part ... it could even be the plot line for Ocean's 14.

Brilliant plan! I admire these men for what they planned. Although I do not condone this act but heck... these guys rock.

I do not condone thievery. Nonetheless, I appreciate the brilliant planning that went into this. (They could have not have known of the future award-winning and/or jewelry-wearing) but DID know of the construction and had a firm, organized plan to steal. I say HOORAY to them with the same vigor I did in 1973 when D.B. Cooper jumped from a 727 with more than $200,000 cash. I do not approve of the action, but I do applaud the moxie! -- J.W.

Obviously it's a bad thing to do, and I hope they get caught.
