Gary "Dungeon Master" Gygax, the co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, died yesterday. He leaves behind a legacy, over the past 34 years, of having inspired untold numbers of pimple-addled adolescent boys to take a break from "taming the dragon" and imagine themselves as Dark Elvish wizards with magic powers. The game, which is known for its complicated rules and numerous spin-offs, gave Gygax "a cultural influence far broader than his relatively narrow fame among hard-core game enthusiasts," according to the New York Times.
BoingBoing has a good interview with Gygax from 2003, in which he talks about the genesis of the game and takes credit for creating the game's infamous, many-sided dice. And an obit in Canada's Globe and Mail give Gygax credit for the popularity of everything from Lord of the Rings to Halo 3.
So, we pour a little splash of 40-ounce Gatorade on the shag carpet of our parents' basement for the fallen 30th-level Enchanter.

I'm sorry, but did you just say D&D was just for teenage guys with pimples? I'm in college, I'm female, I have no pimples, and I play D&D. I play with other college students, who are all older than 20, and are acne-free (both female and male). Get away from the stereotyping, please.

Gygax inspired the Lord of the Rings? Are they crazy? LotR was written years before this guy made his board game.

They didn't say he inspired the Lord of the Rings. They said they credit him for its popularity. I'm a huge Tolkien fan myself (Years and YEARS before the movies) and I understand what they are trying to say. If it wasn't for Gygax's popularizing that kind of culture it may not have been such a hit. I personally think that is BS because LoTR has always held it's own and still would have without this guy. As for the stereotypes, very lame. There's tattoo-ridden pro fighters who claim to play D&D.

Bah, quit griping about stereotypes and accept the fact that you're nerds. Unite under the banner of nerdhood and embrace it. Who cares if you don't have zits or you're a girl, you don't need a pocket-protector and Harry Potter glasses to be a nerd! We're an all-inclusive clique! As long as you know the difference between a d20 and percentile dice, you are our family!
