With the release of "Semi-Pro" and March Madness descending upon us, one question looms large: Why has basketball played host to so many horrendous hairdos? Most players (at least the professionals) have the cash for stylists who can give tonsorial tips, and yet for every fantastic collection of locks such as Artis Gilmore's, there's also a Larry Bird "$5 Special" that looks like it dropped from the wrong end of a Flowbee.
Maybe it's because ballers are so tall they think no one will notice what's on top of their heads. But we do, and we're concerned.
Who did we miss? Let us know.

This reeks of racism!! Some of those guys' hairs actually grow like that or are cultural hairtyles like the "corn rows," Afros, or curly hair. There is a difference between being proud of who one is by expressing it through appearance than showing off one's locks for the sake of attention. Whoever thought of this is an idiot because you're also comparing hairstyles from different times. I'm sure our children and grandchildren will find our current looks hilarious or ridiculous.

there was a while where rip hamilton had a contract with one of the tire companies and made his hair look like the tread on their newest product.

I agree with the above person, corn rows and braids don't constitute a terrible haircut, they are a way of doing your hair to be proud of who you are or where you come from. And if you let your hair grow naturally, it is not a terrible cut. Likewise when you use pictures from years ago you should be mindful that hair styles, all of them, go in and out, sometimes come back. After all whoever created this, how do we know what your hair looks like? After all who cares?

OnceDeliverance,
It can't reek of racisim. Out of 27 pictures, 13 were of white guys. The rest were mexican, columbian and black. The reporter is simply stating that these "do's" look incredibly dumb. Just as you probably do when you spout your mouth off in front of people.

i can't believe this article hasn't been pulled and a apology for insensitivity been posted in its place. i guess the eurocentric look/ideal is key even in a sport dominated by minorities.
"Now here's another thing we can thank Julius "Dr. J" Erving for: Popularizing 'fros in the NBA, a move that kept many other haircut horror stories from happening"- Asylum Staff
Unbelievable!!! I hope someone catches major wind for this one. I'm very offended as a reader and minority that in this day and age afros, braids, and curly hair is still considered "bad hair". Reader lost, blogging offensive article, and telling friends the same.

Pollard's hair still leaves a lot to be desired. I was recently appalled to discover that my hair had the current Pollard look so I had to make some drastic changes. Sadly the end of this post shows the pre-change:
