What's worse than a truck turning over on the highway, adding hours to your morning commute? How about a hole in that truck releasing a swarm of over six million bees. That's what happened recently near Sacramento, where a big rig transporting more than 400 hives brimming with honeybees flipped over, leaving many police officers, firefighters and passers-by on the wrong end of a stinger.
"People were being stung left and right," said Officer Steve Merchant of the California Highway Patrol. "It was an ugly, ugly scene."
Authorities brought in a cadre of beekeepers armed with smoke machines, and they were able to get the situation under control in about seven hours.
Send Us Your Pitches: Some stories beg to be turned into Hollywood blockbusters. Let's hear how you would turn this piece of weird news into a star vehicle. Here's a fun detail to throw in: The local newspaper is actually named the Sacramento Bee.
Do you hate getting stung? You probably really hate needles.
Love bees and honey? What about eating locust?
