Ever notice that those "savvy traveler" columns regurgitate the same advice over and over? Drink plenty of water and check the Internet to find a deal on hotels. Wow. No one ever thought of that before. To become a real savvy traveler, you must understand that you're insignificant to the travel industry, says Chuck Thompson author of the new travel memoir "Smile While You're Lying."
No matter how much you spend on travel, your bottom-line value to the industry is so insignificant that it can't actually be calculated: 658 million passengers took more than 10.5 million domestic flights in this country in 2007.
To upgrade your trip, try using these travel tips.

Make the deal even sweeter from the start: shop travel rates at this Travelocity affiliated site-my father in law would have saved over $50 a ticket had he checked it out!

the only two things i find wrong with this article is the lying to get a better room rate and being nice to the airline CSRs.
lying is NEVER a good idea. esp when it comes to trying to get a better room rate. there are some places that actually require documentation that you do indeed work for a certain company before giving you the room. ie a company credit card, travel voucher or ID. if you work for the govt, there are discounted rates for you as well. just show your ID when you check in. AAA gets great rates, too. trust me, if you travel alot, getting a AAA membership is worth every penny!
and being nice to the CSRs? wtf-ever! they are there to provide a service, if they don't want to do that, then they need to get another job. i know there are things beyond their control that makes it so i can't get what i want, but i'm not gonna kiss their ass when i know that what i'm asking them to provide me is a part of their damned job description. you do your job and i may reward you for it. otherwise, find another field to work in. mcdonald's is ALWAYS hiring!
