Dear Dr. Ken: I'm still living with my roommate from college. Thing is, he wakes 'n' bakes almost every day (getting stoned first thing in the morning). I've tried to convince him he should take it easy, but he says I'm just dropping "propaganda." Aside from all the Doritos and Mountain Dew, will smoking so much mess with his health? -- Barry P., Austin, Texas
Barry: Sorry to be a buzzkill, but smoking pot affects your short- and long-term health. You expect the impaired cognitive function (messed up thoughts), stunted psycho-motor skills (lack of coordination) and sedation (chilling). Yet the long-term effects of regular pot smoking will really harsh your mellow.
Here's a list of possible chronic effects of the chronic:
Breathing: Lung problems can be pronounced with regular smoking. It's been said three to four joints a day result in breathing problems that are comparable to a pack-a-day cigarette habit.
Sperm and "Man Boobs": Marijuana use impairs sperm and lowers testosterone levels, which can lead to impotence, loss of interest in sex, and gynecomastia, aka "man boobs."
More effects (after the jump)
Cancer: Marijuana, like tobacco, produces a host of known carcinogens and toxic compounds when burned -- whether in a joint, feathered roach clip or skull bong. Frequent pot smokers tend to have more pre-cancerous lung lesions, which often become cancer sooner or later. That risk depends on the frequency and intensity of use.
Gums: A recent study found pot smokers are more likely to get gum disease.
Mental Illness: Chronic use of marijuana (smoked, eaten or in pill form) is associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia, though not necessarily caused by it. Studies of regular marijuana use in relation to the development of depression, impaired memory, or impaired thought have shown mixed results.
Dependence: After long-term use, there can be physical and mental dependence. The body can take a month to adjust to life without pot.
There are, of course, a number of approved medical uses for marijuana and its active ingredient, THC, but chances are you're not looking to your doctor for a prescription. The biggest health risk from smoking pot once or twice is an accidental injury. Otherwise, it's not likely to result in a major health problem. Increased use, however, leads to increased risk.

Seriously, I love history. The real reason why marijuana is illegal is because the white man was trying to drive the mexicans and slaves out of Mexican territory. The only way to do so was to create propoganda stating the weed made men insane, and raped women. At first, they would fine Mexicans to a life-time in prison if caught with weed. Want to smoke? Go to Amsterdam. And all that risks is total bulls**t. I have asked many science professors. What THC does is either speed up or slow down your action potentials (electricity in the brain cells) for an average time of 4 hours. With this, you can have a variety of symptoms. And sure, you may get lung cancer. You're inhaling smoke!! (just like cigarrates and blacks.) But alcohol kills you, weed doesnt. Alcohold destroys brain cells, weed only forms a barrier in the cell so no information can get in for a period of time. Think, Indians have used it, everyone has used it in history.

i am 53 years, i smoked weed since i was 15 years...massively, religiously, out smoked everyone i know...at least an oz. every other day. no bad effects or terrible aftereffects. at 48, i went to a pain clinic and was told, i have osteoporosis and had broken three ribs from slipping on a wet marble bathroom fall. the drs, found a trace of marijuana in urine from a drug tests and told me, if they were going to treat me with some powerful drugs, i could never have a dirty drug test...i went home and got rid of my stash...quit right then...no going crazy or craving it and haven't smoked in 5 or 6 years... it is not physically or psychologically addicting... if you must stop, then... you JUST SAY NO!!!

Different "drugs" affect different people in different ways. Alcohol is a drug also, and some people can drink and not become alcoholics or get liver disease and others have a problem with it. Some people are allergic to certain meds and some aren't. Some can smoke Pot and some can't.

Infrequent pot smoking will not hurt you in any way.
Smoking constantly just makes you into a zombie.

I hate people to tell me what I can and cant do. Ive smoked pot since I was about seven years old and Im probably smarter than most people. I recently had to stop smokeing for job reasons. Since then my blood pressure has risen 10 points on both sides. I smoked to put up with stupidity now I have to take blood pressure medicine. I have had to keep check of my health all my life so dont give that crap about it being bad for you.Its apparently bad because it cant be taxed, shit on all that. It should be sold on the shelf beside the tomato plants at the nearst convience store!

You know pot has the chemical component, THC, which is a drug. I have smoked pot many times, and it INCREASES my productivity, it "opens" up my way of thinking, and it INCREASES my sex drive. I think the real problem is that the medical community knows that the drug THC (in decent amounts, not stoned out of your mind), can produce postive effects, can be bought easily, (and some people grow it for thier own use), and thereby "bypassing" alot of the medical communities "money making machine" of prescribing drugs and office visits. Can there be bad side affects? I am sure there are those that could have them. BUT, guess what, isn't that true of ALL drugs? It is so obvious that the medical community has the government, and police, etc, BRAINWASHED, about all the "harm" that it does. I am sick of it actually.

I just have one thing to say....as a NORML advocate I feel that I would rather see people smoking pot than drinking booze, the reason....someone smoking pot is gooing to relax kickback and enjoy life whereas some drinking booze is going to go out in their vehicle and by chance crash into a family of six just trying to get more booze. So to all those who smoke pot .....enjoy life , have your escape, life is too short rfor all the stress and bullshit!
