The writer of the article thinks it's cute to talk about "starting a lucrative drug ring"? Some things should not be joked about, sir; get a little decency and common sense in your life.

This as*hole thinks starting a lucrative drug ring is funny. That is the type of people and stories AOL presents to its readers.
Maybe Mathew is smoking or selling the white powder himself.
Being a Jewish Yenta with his name I am a little taken by his story...SHAME ON YOU....

.....this whole deal is laughable......so many of these companies are in such poor shape and treat employees like indentured servants there is no way you would have the same boss or identical situations in the next company. Finally, if you have to wait a year for benefits to kick in the new position, don't accept it and keep lookng for a more positive employer. Cheap employers are their own tonic...

Drug Sales?? We're supposed to take advice from someone who advocates drug sales?? Plus, 12 of the 13 "things to do" where repeticious. The author of the article needs to grow up, mature, get seasoned, experience life, think things through, look before he leaps and be more thoughtful. (repetition intended, unlike the article)

So is it legal or is it NOT legal for a company to give you a "bad reference" these days? I have heard because of privacy laws it has become illegal for an employer to disclose any information other than: dates of employment/salary and eligibility for rehire. Is this true?

Depending on the circumstances, former employers are only allowed to give the type of information you mentioned. They are very limited in what they are allowed to say, and new employers are very limited in what they can ask. Some circumstances do allow it. I am heading in to the background check phase of trying to get a law enforcement job. One of the pieces of paper I have to sign and the only one I have to get notorized is a consent form allowing them to ask anyone anything that they feel is relevant to discern my background. Employers may be limited in specifics, but I have to give them copies of my last 3 employee reviews. Which are definitely more specific than salary and rehire status.

I just quit my job and I did not give them any notice. I was mistreated and discriminated against. I got my revenge by killing them with kindness. I left and picked up a job with the company that they are vendors for and I am in the same office with the same people looking at me like what did we do. Now I am the one looking down on them. I got more money and a higher position. It is based on the people and the job.

I think things are different than 20 years ago. If you are leaving for a better job or reasons not the fault of your employer give them 2 weeks notice, be nice and be clear you are leaving for a better job. If you are leaving because of a crappy job and you are being treated poorly and or abused you owe them nothing.
Leave when your ready and tell them the day you are leaving, you will find most places that treat their employees badly and paying them poorly fire people on the spot when a notice is turned in. The writer of the story should join us out here in the real world, you better look out for yourself, with few exceptions there is no loyal employers...

wow, instead of being so uptight about a guy's sarcastic remark, you should have paid more attention to what your daughter was doing. You can't blame the world for your problems because everyone has their own point of view.
Another thing, if you want to cancel your aol membership, do it...you might find that you will also be cancelling your cable, your newspaper, and any other internet you might get.
That is the problem with this country now...we all want to play victim.

If you do have to leave an employer because of working conditions or maltreatment, check out filing for unemployment benefits. It's another option and it works. I sat at home and moped for a couple of months after quitting a job that had become impossible to do. I really liked that job. I was good at it, too, and had worked there for eleven years. After a while, I got angry and wanted to vocalize what had happened. I got a book at the library that explained how to win your unemployment claim. I took the author's suggestions and filed a claim. I won. The company appealed and I won again. It can work. Do your research and then try it. It can work. It worked for me and it was very satisfying. I probably shot myself in the foot because of the timing of my leaving, but the unemployment has really helped.

I think this article showed a lot of thought, and could be useful in case this situation develops. It was also written in an easy to read way... not TOO much detail, but not too little, either. Nice job.

No mater how you feel when you get faired, never burn your bridges. You don't know when you have to come back or ask for references. Leave with digenity just like you came there with no job is worth losing your respect for. I know there's time you feel angry and hurt that you had just lost your job, but just think twice before you do something foolish.
