If you're tryng to steal some money -- and our counsel advises you not to do so -- you want to do as little as possible to attract the attention of the authorities. One way you're certain to put up a red flag is to try and cash a check worth over eight times as much as Microsoft's bid for Yahoo. That's what Texan Charles Ray Fuller did the other day. Fuller walked into a Chase bank and presenting the teller with a personal check from his girlfriend's mother, Andrea Greer, with a lot of zeros at the end of it. The stolen check was made out to "Fulla Comp and Entertainment," the record company Fuller was planning to start.
While somewhat hurt by the matter, Greer and her family were also kind of stunned at Fuller's stupidity. Her grandmother, Sharon Laird, commented: "I said, 'Do what? Is he crazy?' We were just in awe." She is quoted as saying that if her family had $360 billion, "I wouldn't be sitting here. I'd be somewhere drinking margaritas."
As far as we can tell, you don't really need that much to buy a round of margaritas. In fact, you could buy somewhere in the range of 20 to 25 margaritas for every person in America (including those under the drinking age) with $360 billion. But the sentiment holds. We'll lift up one for you on Monday for Cinco de Mayo, Ms. Laird.
