Prison wardens in Louisiana aren't too concerned by reports that an approximately 450-pound bear is roaming the grounds of their jail, not far from the inmates. In fact, they seem to like the intruder, viewing him as another level of protection against would-be jailbreakers.

"I love that bear being right where it is," said Warden Burl Cain, of the Louisiana State Penitentiary. "'I tell you what, none of our inmates are going to try to get out after dark and wander around when they might run into a big old bear. It's like having another guard at no cost to the taxpayer."

The 28-square-mile prison, which is the state's only maximum security facility, is about 115 miles northwest of New Orleans. Most of it is run as a farm, yet a portion of the grounds are untouched woodlands. Some officials say there may be as many as eight to 10 bears in the woods, but it's unusual for them to come anywhere near humans.
