Prison wardens in Louisiana aren't too concerned by reports that an approximately 450-pound bear is roaming the grounds of their jail, not far from the inmates. In fact, they seem to like the intruder, viewing him as another level of protection against would-be jailbreakers."I love that bear being right where it is," said Warden Burl Cain, of the Louisiana State Penitentiary. "'I tell you what, none of our inmates are going to try to get out after dark and wander around when they might run into a big old bear. It's like having another guard at no cost to the taxpayer."
The 28-square-mile prison, which is the state's only maximum security facility, is about 115 miles northwest of New Orleans. Most of it is run as a farm, yet a portion of the grounds are untouched woodlands. Some officials say there may be as many as eight to 10 bears in the woods, but it's unusual for them to come anywhere near humans.
Think this is an animal rights violation? Protest naked!
Here are a few outfits that will intimidate a security bear ...

I can see it now....if someone should escape from jail, and get attacked by a bear, the escapee's family will sue the prison (and the town and the government) for knowingly allowing bears to get close to the prison grounds. Vigilante hunters will then be literally "loaded for bear", and the unfortunate bear (or bears, as I'm sure no one will have a clue which one of the group was the culprit) will also meet his demise. Heaven forbid we allow a bear who has attacked a human, even if on the bear's own territory, to go away unpunished.
Is there a movie in this? You betcha someone will develop one.

Try to get it right, the image you are using is that of a Grizzly bear, not native to Louisiana! Note the extended claws, characteristic to Grizzlies not Black Bears.

your both idiots, its a black bear, but not becuase of its fur color, as grizzleys have fur ranging from red tinted to solid black. You would be able to tell it wasnt a grizzley due to the fact that the picture of the bear shown didnt have a bump on its back (which is solid muscle and found on most of all big bears)

Yeah, this is just another example of sensationalized AOL stories. That is most definitely a Brown bear, a Grizzly. There hasn't been a Grizzly Bear in Louisiana in 100 years, if then. They have Black Bears there, but they aren't very aggressive. Obviously the toads at AOL searched for a picture of a Bear to illustrate this ridiculous story and grabbed the first Bear picture they came across. So typical of an AOL story. No concern for the facts. Just try to sensationalize it and shove it off on the dumb hicks that they consider AOL users to be.

Why can't AOL get at least ONE story right? The image is that of a grizzly when the only wild bears in that area would be American black bears.
Don't get me wrong, a black bear can kill a person just as quickly as a grizzly, but AOL do just a bit of basic research to find out what type of bear it is before choosing an image for the story.

I think all the prisons ought to do that. It would save on expenses, keep the prisoners in. Train them to sniff dope and weapons and you have a real asset.

Ok...this is for all those that have posted comments before me. I have several things to say. First of all...that picture is a picture of a grizzly bear, i agree, however, nowhere is it stated that THAT is the bear roaming around the prison. In fact, there is no caption at all. No where in the STORY is it even HINTED that THAT is the type of bear roaming around the prison. I agree, that it was a sad attempt at giving an IDEA that THAT is the kind of bear roaming the prison, because if we live in the south most of us know what kind of bear we are looking at. Second...for the comment about this prison NOT being a FEDERAL...no where in the STORY does it state that this is a federal prison. In fact it says that it is the "Louisiana State Penitentiary" and that it's the state's only maximum security pen. Yes, the link in aol calls it a federal pen, that is AOL's fault, the story itself however does NOT list it as a federal pen. Thank you.

Bears in the south are about large dog size... and not aggressive, we have family of bears near our lake-house. Man would have no problem scaring one off just by making noise... Only issue is momma bear with small cubs, but still will flight over fight.

Now spread honey on the prisoners on death row and tell them the governor has pardoned them and turn them loose where the bear is .
