There are times when we feel like we could do amazing things on the spur of the moment, like reversing the earth's rotation to save Lois Lane's life. But we're not sure even we would have the cojones to plunge a steak knife into our own throats in hopes of staying alive long enough for the paramedics to arrive. That's what Steve Wilder did recently, after he awoke in the middle of the night unable to breathe. The 55-year-old throat cancer survivor says he thought he was dying when the air wouldn't go into his lungs, and he didn't think emergency services would come quickly enough. So he went to his kitchen, grabbed a knife and made a small hole in his throat, saving his own life.
"It just blocked all the way, and I just got up and I panicked!" said Wilder.
The Omaha man's breathing had stopped because of a pre-existing condition that caused his air passages to swell up, not allowing any air through. Once his throat heals, doctors expect him to make a full recovery.
Question raised: Have you ever made a life-altering split-second decision like that?
Impressed by this guy's feat of self-mutilation? People have done worse to themselves.
And ... even worse.

Duh............ Everybody get REAL here, or have some fun. Don't try to assume both roles... it isn't becoming of intelligence. Especially when it isn't there.

It is obvious that this man who is also battling cancer still has a zest for life and chose to live rather than die.
I applaud him on his tenacity and fortitude. It just goes to show how quick the brain re-acts and how quick thinking can save a life, even if it is your own.
I wish him well.

To Spooky-I was not driving. The Doctors wanted to do back surgery, back then,I had a 50% chance of living-I told them no way. Then, they told me that I would never be able to work, and wanted me to live on disability-I said no way to that too.I had a skull fracture too,and other things on top of that.HAHA,I was only in my 20s then.I worked until 1991,and like you,I have had a full life, and God can take me anytime He is ready.I`m old&tired anyway Suzane

Last August I was in the hospital and stopped breathing. I really don't remember it all as I woke up about a week later with a tube in my throat. It's a scarey thing, but I tell you what I'm someone who has problems breathing (not due to cancer). But I don't think I'd have the courage to put a knife in my throat. I do know when you can't braeth you'll do almost anything to get air in your lungs. It's a terrifying feeling not being able to do something so normal as breathing. I had a series of strokes a few years ago, and it damaged the part of my brain that reminds me to breath. So I can be simply sitting watch TV and all of a sudden I'm out of air and probably stopped breathing for a few minutes without realizing it. Trust me it's really scarey!!
