The Vatican's chief astronomer has stated that belief in aliens does not contradict faith in God.

In an interview, Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said that if discovered, aliens would be considered God's creatures.

"As there is a multiplicity of creatures on earth, so there may be other beings, intelligent, created by God. This does not conflict with our faith, because we cannot put limits on the creative freedom of God," explained Funes.
