You remember how your parents warned you that eating cereals like Franken Berry and Frosted Flakes would kill you? Well, in the age of global warming, that may not be too far off the mark.
Australian researcher Lisa Bricknell, speaking at an environmental health conference, speculated that climate change could result in an epidemic of "killer cornflakes." That's because grains like corn and rye are increasingly being attacked by a killer fungus that thrives in the hot, damp weather that we're going to be seeing more and more of as the world heats up. The fungus has harmful mycotoxins that can cause liver failure and death if eaten in large quantities.
Bricknell acknowledged that the outbreak isn't right around the corner, but notes that the effects of the toxins have been known since the Middle Ages, when European rye bread was contaminated. "People started suffering mass hallucinations, manic depression, gangrene, reduced fertility and suffered a painful, convulsive death," Bricknell said.

If this problem is being exacerbated by global warming which was supposedly caused by the United States post industrial revolution, why is it referencing the middle ages?

Are these foolish people still buying into that global warming crock? No warming has occurred since 1998, from 98-02 there was a cooling trend, and no significant change since. We are primarily talking sun activity here, not human activity, Gore and his panick-mongering notwithstanding.

This is a load of crap. Global warming is a socialist political movement that has nothing to do with science. It is pursued by some environmental groups for political power, and by many scientists looking for government grants.

Part of the problem is that the wheat develops something called ergotamine, which, taken in large enough quantities produces gangrene in humans. At one time it was prescribed as a medicine for migraines since it reduces the diameter of veins and capilaries.

Oh PUL-EEZE! That european fungus that was responsible for the plague occured during a time when it was COLDER and DAMP. The world was in a mini Ice Age and only started to warm up during the latter part of the 19th, and early part of the 20th century.
Yes, agreed that pollution is BAD, but thirty years ago, scientists and environmentalists were saying that we were going to have another Ice Age if we continued doing what we were doing. Over time, the earth has warmed and cooled down. Right now, the "green" people are pushing this as a means to get more involved with our lives by pushing their socialist agenda through the court system. The higher up the green chain you go, the more "priviledged" they seem to think they are. Kinda reminds me of Animal Farm.

first of all get your facts straight. they didn't mention the plague which was caused by fleas. the outbreak they are talking about was caused by fungus in the rye bread. think before you type.

BTW They still think that we are headed for an Ice Age. Sure the environment is heating up now, but the melting of the ice caps will lead to oceanic desalination which in turn will shut down the thermohaline circulation. This circulation is what is responsible for the transport of energy away from the equator, with out this process the world will sink back into a new ice age.
Look it up.

What a shame that so many don't have the intelligence or motivation, due to their political leanings and financial interests, to investigate, understand and act on behalf of our planet. It truly does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that our misuse and overuse of earth's resources, the pollution spewing from cars and factories, chemicals, etc. etc. are going to negatively affect our air, our water, our food, etc. All one needs to do is look around, see what's happening to people and animals and our health, for starters. Look at mutations in fish, animals and people. Look at the allergies, people with asthma, people with skin cancers.
What's most ignorant of all, is to laugh at and hamper the efforts of people who are trying to preserve our planet and our natural resources and the inhabitants of earth.
I applaud the efforts of Al Gore and others, who are trying to do something good, rather than to ravage and pillage, creating war and death and hardship such as our current administration.
America has NOT been a better place and has never been SO disrespected as it has been the past 8 years.

If you want to see how much a 'myth' our ecological problems are, one need only look at pictures of the Smoky Mountains. My Uncle used to work on hiking trails on the Blue Ridge Parkway.... Pictures 30 years ago, many places had trees that are now gone - killed by acid rain.
Is the Ice cap melting? unfortunately
Is the US banning some sprayed medications that deplete the ozone layer just to make pharmacetical companies spend more money? I doubt it.
The number of plants and animals becoming extinct has soared in the last 25 years - I forgot how many become extinct daily - I used to know but it's depressing..
Plants that might cure cancer or another disease - gone forever due to our careless and callous treatment of our home...
Did you know that aspirin is based on a plant from the rain forest?
Not everyone is a callous idiot - but from the responses I read - too many are

What a shame that people let exagerated scare tactics and bad science affect them so much. Most of these "environmentalists" only care about increasing their own self-importance and punishing humankind financially. Where is this mutation of fish, animals and people? (other than Simpsons cartoons) I don't think people should laugh at those who are trying to make a difference and want to do good things and to try to conserve and be "earth-friendly." The problem comes when it is tried to be forced upon people - ala Al Gore. If people want to do stuff, fine, but don't say you have to change your light bulbs or your only allowed to drive a car that gets so much mileage. John Edwards is the biggesst hypocrite. He thinks it is ok to use excesive amounts of energy as long as he is punished financially via surcharges or buying carbon credits which is only an additional fee on top of your utilty bill. Again, if you feel guilty about the amount of energy you use and want to pay more, then go right ahead, but don't force others to pay it. It is a shame because of your political ignorance and hatered that you think that America is not a good place and is disrespected. It is your own party that "hates and disrespects" America far more than the rest of the world.

Do you think that the melting of both the arctic & antarctic ice caps and the Greenland ice sheet (not to mention all the world's glacers) is a hoax? The cause may be in doubt, but I am not crazy enough to think that the above stated melting is not true. I have seen some of the glacers before & after, in the Rocky Mountains.

Holy crap! I can not believe how ignorant you people are! You do not believe global warming is real?!! Global warming refers to the temperatures of the ocean rising, hence the melting of the polar ice caps. With all of that new fresh water mixing with the salt water on the oceans the trans-atlantic current and other major ocean currents will be thrown off. Causing weather catastrophes! Think we've had crazy weather in the last few years JUST WAIT!!! It is stupid people like you who are the real problem.

I wonder if people who lived in medieval times had to pay over five dollars a box for their Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies.
(Seriously, though, if you really think about it, you'll realize that it's a stupid, sensationalist, unscientific scare-tactic article from the get-go.)

The liiberals are in the process of inventing a whole new industry built on BS.
This industry needs teachers, phoney scientist, builders, architects, lawyers.... you name it.
The problem is that this new industry requires no other expertise except for the knowledge of BS.
