Scientists have created a map that shows the differences among smells, potentially enabling odors to be digitized and transferred with computers. To create their map, the researchers started with 250 odors and listed around 1,600 chemical characteristics for each. From this information, they created a chart that shows the distances between smells on a molecular level.
The findings go against the idea that sense of smell is subjective. Instead, it seems that your brain recognizes the funk of odor via your schnoz, just like it recognizes the sound waves emanated by the funk of George Clinton.
The scientists did not say exactly how smells would be digitized, but we've heard that hackers are already cooking up some bugs capable of ripping a nasty one.
