A recent study showed that drivers are four times more likely to be distracted while speaking or preparing to speak than they are when listening. In two different experiments, psychologists found that talking puts far more demand on the brain's resources than listening, especially when trying to take in visual information.
While it's fairly obvious that people yapping on their cell phone are some of the most annoying drivers on the road, the findings provide a better understanding of exactly why these folks are such a menace.
The scientists didn't state it explicitly, but we're advising those who must be on the phone while driving to call mom. She hardly lets you get a word in anyway.
