Researchers have found that when two chimpanzees have a dispute, a third chimp often uses kisses as well as embraces to calm the situation.The behavior is particularly interesting, because chimps rarely show affection in this way other than when they are trying to resolve a conflict.
Chimps are the closet genetic relatives to people, and many scientists see the findings as proof that apes possess a sense of empathy similar to that of humans.
Rumor has it that Gary Busey proved this theory months ago, when he worked out an argument with the chimp in the picture above using a hug and a brief, yet fulfilling tongue kiss. We are waiting to confirm if his findings will be cited in the study.
