Here at Asylum, we've long been fans of all things that go topless in the summer: convertibles, domed stadiums, PETA protesters and other naked activists. One such activist in Ashland, OR, who is often seen riding around on her bicycle topless, has said that she's planning to attend her town's annual Fourth of July parade wearing only a G-string made out of hemp. The Chamber of Commerce has said the plan is against the rules since the parade is a family celebration. But Jen Moss says if they bar her from the festivities, she'll sue for her right to rock out with her boobs out.
Despite the parade's family-friendly rules, the town has fairly lax nudity laws that actually allow for public toplessness. The only stipulation is that citizens are required to cover their genitalia in a city park or the downtown commercial district.
On Moss' side is City Council member Eric Navickas, who said it was "an interesting commentary on our society that we're willing to tolerate dead bodies through our aggressive foreign policy from the war, but not healthy, naked bodies."

Gail the subject is not nudity. It is about equal rights. A man can go topless yet a woman can't. Why? It is not right. You think that a woman going topless is wrong. Many Muslims believe that a woman showing ANY flesh at all is wrong. Do you think that it is right for Muslim woman to be forced to cover their whole bodies? The reason Muslims give for a woman to cober their whole body is the same reason that you give for a woman not to go topless. It is indecent. A muslim man that sees a womans bare leg is going to have the same reaction a lot of American men with an attitude like you and Mike would have if they saw a womans breast. The same way you probably feel it is wrong for Muslim women to be forced to cover their bodies is the same way I and a lot of other people feel it is wrong for an American woman to be forced to cober her breast. So tell me who is right. Let me guess YOU.
Answer my previous question why is it wrong for a woman to show her breast but it is ok for a man? What is wrong with a womans breast?

So what men walk around all the time and equal is equal and we all have them... Watch MTV or VH1 they show weird stuff and sex covered gay sex... Have you been to a beach.. It would a relax to see someone nude without trying to get attention or drunk somewhere with people screaming take it off..

It is sad that this woman thinks so much of herself and so little of others. She does not respect the rights of others and certainly cares nothing about what is decent or right. A 4th of July Parade is certainly not the place for her to be parading her naked breasts. I don't know why Ashland cares so little for their men and children. This woman is just rebellious and perverted and acting like a spoiled child that never was told "NO".

If parading around topless is so important to her and she wants to express her "rights" then why doesn't she go to the city council and see about creating a nude day parade just for her and I'm sure a lot of people would also love to participate. In Brazil they have amazing nude celebrations where people paint their bodies in incredibly creative ways and it is not only artistic but they have a great time. I think she is being quite immature in wanting to sue the city. She is acting like a self centered, spoiled brat that clearly hasn't fulfilled her "I need attention" desire. If attention is what she wants then do it in a way that serves others and is for the greater good of all. Either move to Brazil and "BE FREE" or create a nude day parade here or just get over yourself.

If men are allowed to show nipples, woman should be too. For all you people talking about men walking around with no pants on... please tell me how you could possibly think that a penis is the same thing as a pair of breasts!?
It makes me sick that woman still do not have the same rights as men. If I have to wear a shirt, men should have to where a shirt. The more we repress sex, the more likely for our society to feel the need to rape. If you are exposed to it in a healthy, natural way then you will have sex in a healthy, natural way.

Just leave her alone. Let her go toples or what ever she likes. If the people don't want to see her then they will look away. Chances are more people will attend this parade and it will be a greater event then usual. I would go. :)

I see no problem with this. If a woman wants to walk around topless, she should have that right. Having said that, if a woman does walk around topless, she has NO right to complain if people are looking at her hooters. She's ASKING for people to look by walking around that way.

I agree completely that all societies dictate what it's taboos will be. (College Sociology 101... rules determined by any society are called Mores... pronounced More-A's.... and not like smores without an S. :-) All societies have their own particular mores.) In our society, women walking around with their girls openly on display has been a taboo since the pilgrims landed. I can't tell you how many times I've thought, in my 50+ years, that it's unfair that men can strip to the waist and nobody blinks an eye, but the same is not true for women. I also think it's extremely beautiful to see other cultures that do not have the same inhibitions and taboos. Nonetheless, the mores (as in More-A's... not mores or smores without an S. lol) of our society are our mores/standards/rules. Over time, if this society evolves into one in which more public flesh was the norm, folks will wonder what all the fuss was about way back "then" in the time of our "now." BUT... if that evolutionary process degrades the society as a whole, then it will cost everyone way more than what all the fuss would be worth. Won't know 'til we get there. Based on what we're currently seeing in this society, I have my doubts that the change would bring about good. Just my opinion, for what it's worth. I'd probably have a stronger opinion on the pro side if gravity wasn't such a powerful force. Can't see my knees anymore with my bra off. ;-)

Samuel, it's NOT about equal rights, and it IS about nudity. This is not a country with muslim laws, you are not making comparisons that make sense. Men's boobs and women's boobs are not the same, no matter how much you want them to be. This is a societal and a cultural thing. We're not tribes, we're not europeans. I, personally, am not against nudity, I've been to nude beaches, etc., but for a family event with small children, it's just not acceptable. You know what's great about America? There's LOTS of communities where you can live, breathe, work, shop, and play naked.....Y'all go join one. It's no wonder the world hates Americans, we all think we can do whatever we want wherever we want, like we have some kind of entitlement...it's all about respect and dignity.

I am in complete agreement with you on this, Gail. People say that it's about equal rights, but it isn't. Reading the emails on this board, it is clear that many of the men here would like to see this woman in the parade, topless, so they have "enjoy" the view. That tells me that men still look at women's breasts as sexual. They are sexual. There's no getting around it, no matter what Samuel says. We live in a society where breasts are viewed as a singular objective. Why do you think women wear push-up bras, or low blouses? It is because it is sexual, and women feel sexual dressing like that. So cut the horse-crap, Saumel, and get off your high horse about equality. Life is never equal, it is give and take. Learn to live with it instead of spewing out statements that make no sense whatsoever.

Gail tell me what is wrong with a women going topless? Why is it ok for a man to do it and not a women? Just because in your mind it is this indecent sexual thing doesn't mean it is in everyone elses eyes.
I guess you think it is ok for Muslim women to be forced to cover their whole body and wear a veil, because they are many Muslims that would say. "We can't let that woman walk around in a knee high skirt and no veil at the parade we have children here. That is totally indecent and will harm my childs inocent mind" Those people would feel just as strongly as you do about that as you do about a woman going topless. So if you think that you are right to say what a woman can or can't wear, then you must also think it is right for Muslims to do the same. If you don't then you are a hypocrite and think that only what you think is right is right.

In New York State, (Rochester precisely) a number of years ago, we had a group of women who fought for the right to go topless. There was a lot of publicity, and protesting, etc. Well the law was passed, they can go topless, and guess what. I guarantee you will not see a bunch of topless women here in Rochester, including the ones who brought the law suit. It was only news until they got what they wanted.

Well at least this gal will spice up what could be a rather "boring" town parade. Besides, the business folks there should realize that if they allow the lady to go topless or nude in the parade, it just might bring in more visitors and tourists. More tourists means more money being spent on the local economy.

A more odd than interesting comment by the Ashland City Country member...Comparing tolerance of nudity to dead bodies from a war zone? What does this guy know of war or the reasons we must go to war anyway ?..So we should teach him how to think at this late date? I think it's too late for him and we have better things to do.
Well it just goes to show brains are not a requirement in Ashland ....nor clothes...Whatever
