(Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.)

The Malaysian pen-tailed tree shrew lives on a diet of fermented nectar that smells like beer and has the same alcohol content, yet the creature seems to remain sober.

While animals such as robins and baboons are known to occasionally imbibe, the pen-tailed shrew is the first wild mammal on record to chronically consume alcohol. Researchers estimate the shrews have a 36 percent chance of being drunk by human standards by the end of any given day, yet scientists have yet to observe any obvious signs of inebriation by the tiny critters.

Shrews are believed to be closely related to some of our extinct primate cousins, so solving the mystery of their high tolerance could help scientists better understand alcoholism, and maybe even help develop a cure for the dreaded hangover.

Until then we recommend Gatorade, Advil and a lot of empty promises about never drinking again.
