If you're like us, you grew up with a deep appreciation of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and Victoria's Secret catalogs, though it had nothing to do with a love for swimsuits or lingerie. This, of course, was during the 80s and 90s -- widely considered the "Supermodel Era." That meant the models in those publications, as well as on the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan and a host of other magazines were all household names, not just the unattainable goals of teenage boys everywhere.
We did a little research to find out what those supermodels are up to now, and not surprisingly, it brought back waves of bittersweet post-pubescent nostalgia. After checking out the gallery below, you'll know what we mean.
80s Supermodels -- Where Are They Now
Christie Brinkley The ultimate sun-kissed California blond, Christie reigned as America's sweetheart during the early 80s.

Christie's recent tabloid divorce from fourth husband Peter Cook proves that just because a woman has her pick of men, it doesn't mean she is good at picking men.

Iman The quint-lingual (that means five) daughter of a Somali diplomat was legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent's "dream woman."

Iman has been married to David Bowie since 1992, and currently hosts "Project Runway Canada."

Cindy Crawford With her trademark mole and early embrace of "tasteful" nudity, the former high school valedictorian stood out even in the era of the supermodel.

These days Cindy does former supermodel stuff like charity work and being photographed with other famous people as she sunbaths in St. Tropez.

Christy Turlington Turlington's flawless skin made her the perfect pitchwoman for Maybelline's "Maybe She's Born With It Maybe it's Maybelline" ad campaign, and helped her become one of highest paid supermodels of all-time.

Turlington is married to director-actor Ed Burns, and in 2006 she signed a multi-year deal to return to Maybelline. She also has no problem still posing in the buff, as evidenced by her work for PETA.

Carol Alt Alt, labeled "the face" for her piercing blue eyes and pouty lips, appeared on over 500 magazine covers before abandoning the fashion industry for an acting career that never quite took off.
Ron Galella, WireImage.com
Alt has found success as a nutritional guru -- her two cook books promoting the virtues of the "raw diet" became national best sellers. She's also gone toe-to-toe with Trump on "The Apprentice."

It's interesting that Janice Dickenson calls herself the first super model. Until her tacky show appeared on television, I never heard of her! I always thought Cheryl Tiegs was the first "super model"....no?

We just bought a dinning room set. It's a Kathy Ireland brand. I never heard of her and did not know of her prior fame. The furniture is very good. I think it will last longer than her prior career.

All but one still very beautiful, the one that self-proclaims was the first one, darn she is as ugly as a kick in the nuts.

All of the ladies are beautiful...except Janice. She claims she was "THE" first supermodel. I beg to differ. Her attitude is as bad as her show. She has the nerve to talk about natural looking to the upcoming models. YET...there's nothing natural about that woman...except her "stank" attitude.

Since you asked where Kathy Ireland is now, here is a thumbnail. Kathy, who was designated by no less than Forbes Magazine as Supermodel-turned-Supermogul” may be the world's leading Lifestyle Designer, her Kathy Ireland Worldwide having registered over $1.5 Billion in retail sales in 2007 (Forbes.com, 7/17/08.) On top of which, INC. Magazine honored her as the only female in the top five of its Leading Celebrity Entrepreneurs list.
The list of the top-grossing brand names in the world by License Global Magazine places her Kathy Ireland Worldwide design and marketing firm at number 23, while Ford Motors follows at the number 24 position. Areas in which Kathy’s products have achieved sales leadership include her manufacture and design of furniture, lamps and lighting accessories, fashion, carpeting, flooring, window treatments, kitchen and garden products, bedding, home furnishings, candles and aromatics and now even jewelry.
How has she done that? By adhering to KIW’s mission statement, “finding solutions for families, especially busy moms,” Kathy was acknowledged as “best friend to working mothers” by both Associated Press and the London Times. In line with that, Kathy has been the recipient of Outstanding Mother of the Year from the National Mother’s Day Committee and has been honored for her entrepreneurial efforts by the National Association of Women Business Owners and National Association of Business Leaders and has collected five Good Housekeeping Seals of Approval. That's a brief update on what and how Kathy Ireland is doing now and why she is a role model to millions of American women like me.
