Of the many ways Americans have supported the troops over the years, one surprisingly lasting tradition involves erotic imagery. Take, for example, the drawings of the great pin-up artist Gil Elvgren. During WW II, GIs would adorn their bunks with Elvgren's iconic pictures of sexy young ladies, and daydream about the girls they would eventually start the baby boom with after the war.FortheTroopsOnline is keeping that tradition going by recreating Elvgren's pin-up drawings with live models. For only $8, you can have the 156-page book sent to an active soldier or a veteran in a VA Hospital. (If you want one for yourself, it'll cost you $19.95.)
So if you like your patriotism racy, below is a sampling of the originals with their recreations that may make you sing "God Bless America."
50 Most Memorable Pin-ups
50. Shakira -- In almost any language, Shakira translates into "astounding abs." What's the origin of this six-pack wonder? Shakira fell in love with performing when her father took her to a Middle Eastern restaurant and she discovered belly dancing. (We only mention that detail to help you imagine Shakira belly dancing. It makes the poster even better.)
49. Lisa Hartman -- Best known these days as Mrs. Clint Black, this Texas cutie burst onto the scene in 1976's "Tabitha," a TV series about the grown-up witch-child of Samantha and Darren Stevens from "Bewitched." She's bewitching, all right, and laying it all on the table.
48. Tila Tequila -- What you don't know about Tila: her real name is Tila Nguyen, she was born in Singapore, and was once in a girl gang. What you do know: back before she "found love" on MTV, she held the record for the most MySpace friends ever (1.5 million and counting). And chances are every one of them had this poster.
47. Cheryl Ladd -- Cheryl Ladd may forever be known as Farrah Fawcett's stand-in from "Charlie's Angels," but as soon as she was on the show she proved her cleavage could stand on its own. Nowadays, she spends more time golfing than acting, leaving the latter to her daughter, Jordan Ladd (who appeared in "Grindhouse" and has definitely inherited some of the DNA Chery's exhibits here. (Image from postershop.ch.)
46. Mariah Carey -- While this pop superstar's music polarizes people, can't we all agree on the booty? Time to hold hands. (Image from adrants.com)
45. Charlene Tilton -- You can see the talent of a former Hollywood High cheerleader blazing through Charlene Tilton's bikini in this shot. If you're under the age of 25, you may not realize she once starred as Lucy Ewing in the TV series "Dallas." Her talents will be sorely missed in upcoming movie version. (Image from imageshack.us.)
44. Loni Anderson -- Peroxide blonde hair? Check. Feathered and blown-dried? Check. Absurd, multi-colored backdrop? Double-check. Oh yes, we have all the ingredients of an early-'80s scorcher. Once, Loni was the toast of "WKRP in Cincinnati" and then Mrs. Burt Reynolds. She may now be the faded punchline of "Love Boat" episodes, yet in this poster she's still a Technicolor dream.
43. Alyssa Milano -- The second "Poison Ivy" movie represented that moment when Alyssa transformed from goodie-two-shoes child star to budding sexpot. Sure, she made plenty of cinematic missteps along the way -- including the vaguely erotic "Deadly Sins." Then she posed for this poster -- and we immediately forgave everything.
42. Heather Thomas -- The good news: This poster had no room for Heather Thomas' notable co-star from "The Fall Guy" -- Lee Majors aka the Six-Million Dollar Man. The less-than-good news: This hot poster is as much skin we'll ever see from Ms. Thomas, who said, "I won't take my clothes off because I can't believe it's necessary. You can be sexy with your clothes on just as well as you can by taking off your blouse."
41. Lita Ford -- How did '80s rock-chick Lita Ford sell more than 100 million records? Maybe it was her hot licks that could match any hair-metal god's. Maybe it was an armory full of Aqua Net. Or maybe it was a slew of posters like this one.

1st of all women have no place in the military. They are probably one of the biggest reasons why we are now loosing the war. Also, not many women in the military would appreciate pictures of men cause they're all lesbians anyways. You need to get off your high woman horse and go make some brownies or clean something.

Wow, why do the pin-ups from the past look so much sexier?

The photographer used cheesy props and it looks like the photographer was just coping the pictures the models weren't inspired to be sexy. It was a Great idea for our Military. Someone else should run with the idea and make it hot after all if they can do it back then, they can do it now and they could make a fortune if it's done right.

Hate to say it, but the originals from WWII are much more erotic. Stars these days just don't quite get it.

Gil Elvgren must be spinning in his grave over the lack of creativity in these cheap imitations. The models, props, and lighting stink of amature...
With so many computer aided programs you think they could have done some post- production work to make them somewhat decent.
This is an insult to American History and our troops fighting overseas! Someone should run with this idea and make it a real tribute to Gil.

The originals were much much sexier. The new models just look skanky for the most part.

Hey, Jeff, the reason the older pinups look sexier is simple biology. They look like real women - the kind with big hips that (bluntly) look they would make healthy babies. I realize my feminist friends will have a cardio event over that blasphemy, but it's true. Men want real women, and today's scrawny models, whose bodies resemble pre-pubescent boys in the hip and leg area and the noticably added addition of over-sized silicone implants in the bust, are not biologically attractive to the male mating instinct. Sorry, guys, I'm *not* bad mouthing you. This comes straight from my dad - and brothers, and all their male friends - who have said very bluntly that they find Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe,Rita Hayworth and the like far, far more attractive than the past twenty or so years of models and actresses. Why? Because they look like a women is suppose to!

Its the facial expressions or body postures that make it sexy. It seems that the girls in the past knew how to sit just so (as they couldn't show so much skin) to be sexy. The girls today apparently don't know how to be sexy with their clothes on. I mean, look at the girl with the records...she looks like an idiot. I wouldn't look forward to coming home for that.

I'm a feminist, and the only cardio event Donna's comment caused was wild cheering ;).
I can't comment on the photographic recreations, as I have only seen the thumbnailed, low-res samples here. I do know that I think it's a good idea, however the result came out.

Donna is 100% correct. The old pin ups were definitely more erotic and for the very reasosn she said. I like women to look like women. I'm not interested in men, and that's what todays emaciated models look like. Underfed boys.

How about AOL doing their home work. The most famious Pin Up picture that ever was is not shown. Marilyn Monroe's nude picture that changed the Mens Magazine Industry. If it had not been for the two pictures of her in the 1950's Playboy Magizine would not have been started and all the copycat mag's after that. That picture was the First center fold in the first Playboy. It was made into the most famious calender to that date. Almost every teen boy (nd Man) wanted one or wanted to see their friends who had one. Maybe I am an old man but I will never forget that picture. There has never been another that tops it.

The new models & photography missed the boat entirely. With some good wardrobe & lighting, I could have done better with my SONY digital camera. Grade C-

Growing up as a kid during WWII, I remember distinctly the look that was popular, and it is still popular with me. Donna is on to something! The curvy look is much more desireable than the anorexic, gaut look. The inviting lingree to go along with it is the frosting on the cake. Bring it back!!
