A new study has determined that the sprinter closest to the starting gun has the advantage out of the blocks.Going back over videos from the 2004 Olympics, researchers found that the average reaction time of a sprinter in lane one was 160 milliseconds, and the average time for all other lanes was 175 milliseconds.
They then further tested the findings by having trained and untrained sprinters perform starts with recorded gun shots set at different decibel levels. The louder the gunshot, the faster the reaction time of the test subjects, confirming the initial results.
We're hypothesizing that regardless of lane, the reaction time will decrease if sprinters feel they're being shot at. Scientists, get on that.
