If you're from Texas, you might feel like teachers and guns go together like peanut butter and jelly, and you might be surprised to find out that some people disagree with you. That is exactly what is being debated in Texas, where Gov. Rick Perry recently approved a decision by a local school district to allow teachers and staff to carry concealed weapons on school grounds for protection.
After the jump, we kick off the beginning of a respectful, well-informed discussion between a supporter of the new measure, and one who opposes it. But we really want to hear what you think. So let us know in the comments section. And remember, we are debating the Second Amendment, not the First. In other words, tell us how you really feel.
Check out the debate.
Gun-Wielding Yokel -- It's hard to argue that allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons wouldn't have limited the causalities during a tragedy like Columbine -- if not preventing it all together.
Pansy, Vegan Liberal -- That may be true, but since the year 2000 there has only been an average of seven homicides a year on the grounds of America's 90,000 high schools. Is that really the kind of epidemic that needs to be addressed by radically changing the rules?
Gun-Wielding Yokel -- I'm sure you wouldn't feel that way if you knew one of those victims, or felt there was a real danger of it happening at your local school. Anyway, why shouldn't Second Amendment rights apply to responsible adults who happen to work at a school?
Pansy, Vegan Liberal --But it's not just that they are being allowed to carry guns; it's almost like they are being deputized to use them. We have a police force and we have teachers. And there is good reason they are not the same.
Gun Wielding Yokel --Under the Texas plan, only certain teachers would be carrying guns, and they will have to go through a fairly thorough vetting process and then undergo training. If they are being deputized, so be it -- they could save lives.
Pansy, Vegan Liberal --If school is still anything like when I went there, the only teachers clamoring to pack heat would be the gym teachers. And, training or no training, I don't think the guy who manages a dodgeball team like he's General Patton should necessarily be the one given a firearm.
