As children, we often look to popular culture to provide a sense of what it means to be masculine. For many of us, this leads to strange perspectives on the best ways to fight crime and cultivate body hair. But let's not hold that against our boyhood idols of the 70s and 80s. After all, a lot of these entertainers have had the burden of carrying a signature persona with them, despite the passage of decades. (Now who's being pitied, Mr. T?)
So in an effort to reconnect with our mentors, we give you a look back and an update on some of our favorite boyhood idols. May you still carry a little bit of their magic with you, just hopefully not too much.
Boyhood Idols - Where Are They Now?
John Travolta Then: As Vinnie Barbarino, he offered advice on how to stick a rubber hose up your nose.
ABC / Retna
Now: Watching "Battlefield Earth" on a loop in one of his private planes.
Jean Baptiste Lacroix, WireImage.com
Richard Roundtree Then: As Shaft, he excelled at being a bad mother and at making Shaft both his name and his game
Turner Entertainment Co.
Now: Still being a bad mutha in everything from "Seven" to, uh, "Desperate Housewives."
Stephen Shugerman, Getty Images
Mr. T Then: Pitied fools, drank milk, drove vans through walls.
Everett Collection
Now: Continuing endless pity quest via Snickers and World of Warcraft ads
Scott Gries, Getty Images
David Carradine Then: "Kung Fu" tough guy and master of Zen wisdom.
Everett Collection
Now: Still a master in"Kill Bill" and telephone book commercials.
Andrew Cooper, Miramax
Henry Winkler Then: As the Fonz, he possessed the ability to turn on Arnold's jukebox with a single tap, "jumped the shark" when he literally jumped over a shark.
Paramount / Everett Collection
Now: Possesses ability to crack us up on "Arrested Development," a show that never jumped the shark.

I know where Chuck Norris is....he's been flying to the Middle East to visit with our soldiers. We have a photograph of Chuck with our son at Camp Ramadi, Iraq. Chuck Norris is a good man who doesn't publicize his support for our troops; rather, he takes it upon himself to give them encouragement without any publicity for himself. He stood for hours while each soldier had the opportunity to stand next to him for a photo. Thank you, Mr. Norris.

Mr. Norris is one of my son's heroes. Obviously people hating on Mr. Norris know little about the man and his contributions to fellow people. You haters will never measure up to the man he is. I agree Mr. Norris's acting isn't his strongest attribute but your missing the point!!! Acting and his success in martial arts was the vehicle God blessed him with in order to accomplish greater things such as s positive role model for not just kids but adults as well. Haters will no doubt rip my comments. But seriouly ask what positive contributuions you've made before hating.

Thank you Vikingspirit for letting us know that. Also, thank your son for me for defending our country. I support our military and get very incensed at those that take our freedoms for granted.
Thank you Chuck Norris for being the standup guy that I always thought you were!
:) God Bless you!

Chuck Norris is wonderful. He has done immeasurable good in this world controlled by greed and betrayal. He does not need any stupid juvenile adoration, celebrity style. He knows who he is. W.Glidden, LT , USMC Retired.

solomeeeo - why don't you tell HIM that? Face-to-Face?? Seriously, unlike Mr. T and Hulk Hogan (who were also superb athletes), Chuck Norris was a full contact Karate Champion. With the death of John Wayne, and the fact that most Hollywood actors are gay, the movies (and later, TV) needed real heros, not trained, effeminate actors. Remember World War II Congressional Medal of Honor winner Audey Murphy? He became a credible Hollywood star, in Westerns and war movies, of course. And don't forget, Chuck Norris's movies and TV show were highly profitable!

I think Chuck Norris is a good Christian model for all the world to see. At least he does have morals. Just pray for him and not talk about him. I'm sure you wouldn't want that done to you.

I had an article that was written some years ago that said a director had told him that for a Karate (spel?) champion he sure was tight.
Also, Arnie was told that he'd never make a movie star because of his muscles and accent.
Look where they are now. One is a governor and the other visits our troops overseas and probably does more than we know about.
These two men will always get my vote!
