When we last checked in with Dede -- an Indonesian man infected by a virus that causes his limbs to grow bark-like protrusions -- he was hoping a new medical treatment might be able to improve his condition. Now it seems that a battery of treatments have indeed helped, by allowing over 10 pounds of gnarled warts to be surgically removed from his body.
Called the "Tree Man," Dede first began getting the warts after scraping his knee as a teen, when he contracted what doctors think is a rare form of Human papillomavirus. Having undergone nine operations to remove 95 percent of the growths, Dede's life is finally returning to some semblance of normalcy.
"He cannot be 100 percent cured, but his life quality has improved. If once he depended on others to do his activities, now he can eat by himself, use his hand to write, use the cell phone," said his doctor.
Question Raised: Could you handle this kind of physical abnormality?
Think that's weird? Take a look below.
Weirdest Pageants of the World
Miss Klingon Empire Beauty Pageant
She might look like a horrifying battle ax to you, but all the guys at the Star Trek convention were asking for her number.

Miss Outdoor Life
During the talent portion of this Maryland pageant contestants skin muskrats. Beauty queens and skinned varmint -- what's better than that?

International Bottom Championship
First place gets 10,000 dollars, an underwear modeling contract and, curiously, an insurance policy on her winning assets. (In case her new found life of luxury leads to a terrible bidet accident, we're guessing)

Miss Wheelchair America
Scandal hit Miss Wheelchair America in 2005 when Miss Wheelchair Wisconsin was removed from the pageant after photos of her standing were leaked to the press. Seriously.

Miss Gothic
You won't find a spray tan or an evening dress that isn't black at this contest to find the gloomiest beauty.

Miss Hooker
Miss Hooker competitors aren't actually working girls. Instead they are sending up typical beauty contest mores by dressing slutty, displaying off-beat talents -- such as frying an egg while stripping -- and competing under names like Ms. Squirt and Ms. One Dolla No Holla.

Miss Plastic Surgery
Started after a woman was kicked out of Miss Beijing for having had plastic surgery, contestants in this Chinese pageant need a note from their doctor confirming that they have had alterations.

We're guessing if any of these lovelies end up pumping out a girl the poor thing will be on the creepy child beauty pageant circuit the day she is able to stand upright.

Miss Subway
Between 1941 and 1976 Miss Subway was a New York City mass transit staple, with commuters voting on a group of contenders whose posters and biographies were placed inside of subway cars. It was brought back as a one-off pageant in 2004.

I saw Dede on the Discovery Channel the other night, and at the time they said he hadn't taken Dr. Gaspari from Johns Hopkins up on his offer of treatment. Apparently, there was lag time between the documentary and Dede getting help. He is really quite good looking, and now he won't have to rely on the "circus" (which was actually and traveling freak show) to make a living. Good job Dede! and thank you Doctor!

I saw Dede and his family on The Learning Channel and he is a very courageous man to live a life like this..and his family are so supportive of him also. The Doctor who traveled there to run tests on Dede is to be blessed for helping him. God Bless you Dede and I am so happy to hear that you have finally been helped and no longer have to perform in the circus. Take care.
