On the last Wednesday of August, the Spanish village of Buñol hosts thousands of tourists, who come from all over the world looking for one thing -- a massive food fight.Called La Tomatina, the festival begins when trucks roll into town carrying loads of tomatoes. Before long, revelers begin throwing, smashing and splashing around in tomato mush, thoroughly enjoying the veggie-fueled (or is it technically a fruit?) chaos.
We put together a gallery of this year's festivities below. After compiling it, we came to the realization that we'll never look at a plate of pasta the same way again. But for you, bon appetit!

Revelers throw tomatoes, during the annual food fight, the Tomatina, in the small Spanish town of Bunol, near Valencia, Spain, Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. Each year tens of thousands of people hurl truckloads of tomatoes at each other, sending knee-deep rivers through the small Spanish town. Local lore says it began in the mid-1940s with a food battle that broke out between youngsters near a vegetable stand on the town square in Bunol. (AP Photo/Fernando Bustamante)

The origin of the tomato fight is disputed - everyone in Bunol seems to have a favourite story - but most agree it started around 1940, in the early years of the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco.
