Before images of naked women could be easily accessed on the Internet, teenage boys treated Playboys like first editions of great works of literature. They protected them from sunlight -- albeit hidden underneath the bed -- and rarely let anyone aside from other collectors admire the detail.

Obviously, this created a connection between Playboy devotees and the ladies portrayed in that most important middle section, featuring the fold-out of that month's Playmate.
