According to a new study, vegetarians and vegans are six times more likely to suffer from brain shrinkage than meat eaters. The link was discovered after scientists at Oxford University ran memory tests, physical checks and brain scans on 107 people between the ages of 61and 87, and then retested them five years later.
Researchers speculate the loss of brain mass in vegetarians and vegans is due to a deficiency of Vitamin B12, which is found in meat, fish and eggs. This type of brain atrophy is linked to Alzheimer's Disease and other cognitive failings.
The decision to eat meat is often attacked by veggies, but it now seems as though these kinds of affronts may just be a product of small-mindedness.

Pure rubbish. I've read studies (no, I can't find them now....) that suggest the opposite. Veggie peeps have a LOWER chance of Alzheimers, in fact.
And B12 is really, really easy to come by in the veg world. I think brewers yeast, for one, is a good supplement.
Haven't eaten dead animal remains in 13 years and I'm smart as a whip.

Yeah don't bother with people with developing brains. Lets go to the senior citizens because they have pristine brains and nothing can happen in 5 years after you are already rather old. Anyone think that the difference (biologically and developmentally speaking) from 21-26 is the same as 65-70?

You cannot use this study to justify murder, because it is a very simple thing to eat one bowl of fortified breakfast cereal and get all of your r.d.a. of B-12. FAIL - try again neanderthals.

Food for thought:
Meat is harder to digest than plant foods and continues to putrefy in the digestive tract, taking about 4 to 4 1/12 hours to be absorbed in the intestines versus 2 to 2 1/2 for grains and vegetables. Purification produces toxins and amines that accumulate in the ,liver, kidneys and large intestine, destroys bacterial cultures, especially those that synthesize the vitamin B complexes, and causes degeneration of the villi of the small intestine where metabolized foodstuffs are absorbed into the blood. Saturated fatty acids, from meet and other animal products, accumulate in and around vital organs and blood vessels, often leading to cysts, tumors, and hardening of the arteries.

your socalled digestiv facts are flat out false. Three fourths of all vegetable matter passes through the gut undigested, meat is quickly and completely broken down in the stomach and upper bowel. Meat does not fill the gut with methane as a result of digestion as does vegetable matter does. The simple fact is to get the proper amount of protien you have to consume 4 to five times the vegetable matter than you do meat. These are scientific facts, not fallacies like those you are trying to promote.
The truth is there are pros and cons to both diets and to say that pne is absolutely superior to the other is simple hogwash. The truth be known a proper vegetarian diet that has healthy cuts of meat, fish and poultry added to it is the diet that the human physiology is based on. Modern beef and pork that is heavily grain fed is filled with unhealthy fats where as if these feed animals are raised on diets that are natural to their physiology, the health risks that are associated with meat eating are literally nonexistant.
In summary it's time for all you name callers and finger pointers to grow up and get your facts straight.

Give me a break, this is meat propaganda. If you think that it’s ok to kill something that can feel pain and support an industry that prides itself on the cruel treatment of animals it is you that is suffering from shrinkage. Besides everything these days is fortified with B12, from soy milk to soy ice cream. Do some real science and get a better control group. –p And I agree with Steve “If your God supports the killing of his own creations which feel pain, it's time to find a new, more compassionate God.”

God, this is such a bad article. B12 deficiency is a known problem for vegetarians and much more so for vegans, and it is also known for ages what B12 deficiency causes. Its hard to believe someone actually funded a study to just check again if its still true, and if they actually did, well, kudos.

This isn't about a meat deficiency, it's about trendy idiots who decide to eat french fries all day instead of being responsible about their vegetarianism. Self-respect is just as important as respecting the life around you, and without a proper multivitamin (vegan ones are very easy to get at any health store and have plenty of b12, amongst other things we veggies need), you can be sure that limiting your diet without proper research into substituting what you subtract will have all sorts of negative consequences. that's just common sense.
but way to blow a couple thousand on a pointless study. good job.

So basically this is saying that a vitamin deficiency shrinks the brain, not a vegetarian diet. I am vegan and I take a b-12 supplement. I believe that the person who wrote this article has a very small brain.

Seems like a lot of folk on here disagree, including myself.
If anything vegetarians stay away from McDonalds and that to me is smart. Eat your meat and shoot a deer, I can care less. I do it for the pure fact that I enjoy my diet of fruits and veggies.
Go waste your money on studies that really matter. Also pick an age group that actually uses the internet for research and not to find when the next polka night is happening.

meat is yummy.
i would prefer to kill it myself and prepare it myself.
but this planet is too overcrowded to do anything.
but you hve to be stupid to go against basic instincts like eating whatever is around.
you have to be pretty spoiled to do that aswell. do you think poor people in africa choose to eat only vegitables and cheese? id bet quite alot that they eat anyting they can.
it seems pretty unhealthy to me to just eat a vegitarian diet. ( even moreso a vegan diet, may aswell starve yourself ). i dunno any figures but ino what my gut tells me and thats how its suppost to be.

As far as your people in Africa argument goes, the amount of grain used for 1 factory farm over the course of the year would not only make up for the difference in food lost from the dead animals, but also feed an entire nation the size of Kenya. So truely it is the meat eaters who are spoiled
