DNA technology comes in handy for all sorts of things these days. It can determine paternity, susceptibility to disease and ethnic heritage to name a few.

If you need another use, look no farther than an Israeli town that's using doggy DNA to track down pet owners whose hounds poop on the sidewalks. Officials in Petah Tikva, a town near Tel Aviv, are in the process of setting up a DNA database to match the droppings of local dogs to their owners as a way to fine those who violate the law by not picking up after their pets.

"My goal is to get the residents involved and tell them that together, we can make our environment clean," said Tika Bar-On, the city's chief veterinarian. She says that local pet owners are supportive of the measure because it helps to keep the streets clean. Currently, the DNA testing is voluntary for dog owners, but officials say it could soon be mandatory.

Question Raised: Is this a reasonable solution or a crapload of wasted of time and resources?
