The attack of the unstoppable walking dead is the most terrifying non-real threat facing humanity today.

Zombies have inspired representations in art, music and claymation YouTube videos. However, we're pretty sure there has never been a scarier vision of the zombie menace than the LEGO Zombie Apocalypse.

Based around a competition taking place at this year's BrickCon LEGO convention, builders everywhere have been challenged to construct the best and scariest zombie diorama they can from nothing but LEGO bricks and imagination.

The contest is organized by the minds behind The Brothers Brick, the Web's best LEGO blog, and promises to feature all kinds of ghoulish plastic zombie fun. We can't wait to see what comes out of the contest, but in the meantime, we've collected some of our favorite LEGO zombie moments in the gallery below.

The Lego apocalypse was fast and brutal. Pirates, spacemen, even the wimpy minifigs from the gasoline station playset -- none were spared.

They came from everywhere, undeterred by realistic weaponry from Brickarms.com.

Just before the victims of the Lego apocalypse died, they often thought to themselves "hmm, those blue zombie faces were actually pretty well designed. I wonder if you can buy those separately on Lego.com?"

If you look closely, you can see the Lego strippers trying to escape from the Lego zombies. Our two favourite things attacking each other in Lego form. Brilliant.

The Lego morgue was the last place you wanted to be on that fateful day...

It's not easy making Lego gory. This guy managed it.
