Five years ago today, Timothy Treadwell was eaten by a grizzly bear. His story -- captivatingly told by Werner Herzog in the 2005 documentary "Grizzly Man" -- is a cautionary tale about the dangers of human beings getting too comfortable with wild nature, especially when that nature is big and carnivorous.Treadwell is by no means the only person who learned this lesson the hard way. Every year, bears kill 5 to 10 people, sharks take out about 100, angry, angry hippos end 150 lives and nearly 500 buy the farm courtesy of our old friend Mr. Elephant.
So while holed up indoors, we decided to commemorate Treadwell and all the others who've ventured too close to murderous creatures by compiling a gallery of some of the most incredible deadly animal attacks ever. This may not teach you to respect nature, as Tim wanted, but at least you may grow to fear it ... a lot.
Deadly Animal Attacks
In 2004, Orange County, Cal. mountain biker Mark Reynolds was attacked and killed by a 110-pound mountain lion while kneeling over to fix his bike's chain. Later in the same day, the big cat pounced on another biker and had its jaws on her head when other cyclists came to her rescue. The animal was later put down by rangers.

There are less than 4,000 of these giant lizards on Komodo, living alongside the 1,200 human residents of the island. Thirty-three years had passed without incident before an 8-year-old boy got too close to a Komodo Dragon in June 2007, shattering the seemingly harmonious coexistence.

Hippos are not the cute animals many perceive them to be. They are extremely territorial, especially when in rut (a state of sexual excitement). In 1999, a horny hippopotamus mistook a tractor for a female and trampled a Parisian zoo director en route to the seductive machinery.

Sometimes an animal's rage only really comes out when it's a bit tipsy. Drunk off villagers' rice beer, a pack of elephants trampled six people in the northeast Indian state of Assam in 2002. "It has been noticed that elephants have developed a taste for rice beer and local liquor and they always look for it when they invade villages," explained an elephant expert after the incident.

Between July 1 and July 12, 1916, five people were attacked by sharks along the New Jersey shoreline, and only one survived. The Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916 would later inspire Peter Benchley to write the novel "Jaws."

In 2006, chimps attacked and killed an employee of the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Sierra Leone. The chimpanzees also roughed up some American and Canadian workers. Word is they were docile moments before they flew into a rage, biting and tearing at the clothes of anyone within striking distance.
Professor Val Plumwood was famous in her native Australia for surviving the death roll of a saltwater crocodile, an extremely rare feat. She was not, however, able to survive the attack of a snake. The naturalist is believed to have been bitten a few days before being found dead on her property.

"Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin wrestled his nick-namesake and generally palled around with some nasty critters, but it was a seemingly benign stingray that took out the star of TV and movies. The animal's barb pierced Irwin's chest while he and his crew were shooting a documentary in 2006.

People are fascinated by big cats, making them a big draw for zoos. A 4-year-old Siberian tiger at the San Francisco zoo was tired of all the crowd-pleasing on Christmas Day of 2007, and decided to bound over a 20-foot wall to attack zoo patrons. One person was killed and two others were mauled.

Though they haven't killed anyone yet, Australian farmers have recently starting voicing their concerns about hybrid wild dogs. Apparently, when a canine reaches 21 kilos, it has the ability to kill creatures its own weight and above to survive. Farmers say the dogs are currently at 19.5 kilos and growing larger.

Stop saying that humans are not carnivores, therefore we are not designed to eat meat. Are you serious? We are omnivores, as our dentition proves. If we were MEANT to be herbivores, all of our teeth would look the same! And our ancestors scavenged and foraged before they developed hunting methods. Yet another newsflash--chimps have been noted to hunt in groups when they are taking out larger prey--usually monkeys. Eating meat is something that our ancestors have been doing for a LONG time. If being a vegetarian was natural, then I wouldn't need to take supplements. Recent studies suggest that plants have a degree of feeling--think about that the next time you eat a salad.

A 1997 study by the World Health Organization showed that about 300,000 people are murdered worldwide each year in wars, conflicts, and violence between individuals.
Of the 2,400,000-plus Americans who die each year, over 45,000 are killed in transport accidents. The number of homicides, poisonings, and drunk driving fatalities are roughly the same, at around 17,000 each. Perhaps more surprisingly, a stunning 178,000 Americans die from medical or hospital error every year.
(American only, the second paragraph.)
Don't worry about undomesticated animals.

gigi.... what if your allergic to soy like i am? o.O thats why i dont drink soy milk. i drink some rice milk on occasion (though it has flavor and other additives [ie, horchatas]) we were all meant to eat animals, thats how God made us. He said that certain animals that came off the Ark are clean and shall be eaten by man. This man died of his own stupidity. It was a wild grizzly bear. Not a teddy bear. People need more common sense and just need to leave the dangerous animals alone. jeez

I'm a people lover and an animal lover. I support anything that might allow humans to understand animals. It is unfortunate that people sometimes die in the process of doing something that they love, however, if we didn't take risks sometimes then where exactly would we be today? We'd still be cavemen. Humans are at the top of the hierarchy and because of this I believe it is our duty to protect and try to understand creatures and not try to exploit them. Everytime I take my nephew to the zoo I am torn. It's a place for humans to (in a way) co-exist with nature however I do feel sorry for the animals because it's not their natural state. I hate that elephants are killed for their ivory tusks. I don't see anything wrong with hunting for food but for sport or profit it's just barbaric.

Furthermore, I do believe that the media will take anything possible and sensationalize it. I must admit that I am unaware of any statistical data regarding wild animals mauling or killing human beings ,however; I'm quite certain that it pales in comparison to the mental and physical trauma that we humans inflict upon each other on a daily basis.

Most animals are beautiful but if they are wild (or maybe big), then don't mess with them. Tigers are gorgeous, GORGEOUS, but scary as hell. Dogs can be unpredictable, even tamed; elephants, crocs, hippos, komodos, non-venomous contricting snakes are obvious. But how do we know this? Investigate ourselves. It's okay to like animals but we tend to go too far.
(and aren't humans mostly omnivore?)
And I'd like to add, I STILL don't have any sympathy for the guys who got mauled by the provoked tiger.

Wuffie,
I didn't have any sympathy for them either. I always sort of felt bad that I didn't but It makes me feel better that someone agrees with me. They were tormenting the tiger after all and I really don't feel that the animal should've been put to sleep. The idiots that were provoking it were the predators in that particular situation.

A reply to gigi. A small portion of your post is good, but a big portion of it is very false.
Humans CANNOT get all their nutrients from plants alone. Do your homework…and not from online sources either. Take a nutrition class. A real nutrition class at a college designed to teach nutrition, not just vegan. LEARN!!.
The only real way to battle food animal abuse is to go after the abusers.
Your rational on dogs and cats is a little tweaked. Supporting spay/neuter programs is great, but the down look on domestication is far off. Wolves and humans have always interacted. Before the carnage on wolves and Native Americans, wolves and humans had a symbiotic type relationship. Natives allowed wolves to hang around villages defending the territory against other predators and intruders and in turn were fed scraps of food.
Also, dogs are not wild just because there’s a genetic relation to wolves. We’re genetically related to chimps. Chimps are wild. By your logic, humans are wild animals too…LOL.
Milk does NOT promote osteoporosis. It’s got calcium in it…duh. The only thing drinking milk past weaning is a person may become lactose intolerant, which only means they are no longer producing lactase to break down lactose, so they get cramps and the shits.
Also, we are not the only animals to drink milk from another animal. We are, however, the only animals that continue to drink milk past weaning.
How the hell are eggs unfertilized waste??? They are an excellent source of nutrition.
Saturated fats are VERY important in our diets. The problem with saturated fats is people have a tendency to eat too much of it, but we still need it. AGAIN…TAKE A REAL COLLEGE NUTRITION CLASS!!
BTW…plants are living things too. Perhaps we just shouldn’t eat???

And not to forget the comparison to what humans do to wildlife. What a contrast. We, as of humans are the "murderous creatures" as this article so sadly portrays.

the most deadly animal on the planet is man. just in the u.s. alone man kills 10 billion animals a year for food. that does not include those animals hunted for food and trophy hunting. nor does it include animals killed in other sick but legal means like poaching, animal research...man kills man more than all animals attacks on humans combined.

Just a comment and question....
If you love dogs cats etc etc... what does a Vegan feed a dog and or cat??? unless i am missing something.. they are CARNIVORES and need meat... therefore their food must be meat based.. anything else is being cruel to the animal.. ya cannot make a cat eat carrots.. it will kill the cat...therefore.. to feed your dog or cat...you have to be a part of the slaughter of other animals to feed them ...plain and simple!!
I have nothing against Vegans.. its their CHOICE to eat vegetables only
as for me.. ill take a hot juicy piece of char- broiled cow carcass anyday as that my choice
YUM!!!
pass the A-1 please!!

I just love how judgemental vegans are. You talk about "greedy cattle farmers" and judge anyone who doesn't want to live their lives out eating only grains and soy. What a joke. Why is it that anyone who runs a business and seeks to make a profit in this country is labeled as "greedy" by the leftist nutjobs. Cattle farmers are just normal people like you and me, who are running their businesses - filling a need in our society - and trying to earn a living so that they can provide for their families. Our bodies operate just fine on meat. The reason that America is overweight is because they eat fried burgers, hotdogs, and philly cheesesteak sandwiches. It's the way we cook the meat, not the meat itself. There are many, many ways to add lean/healthy meats to our diets that are extremely nutritious for our bodies. The key is moderation and balance in your diet. I agree that animals shouldn't be abused and cruelly treated in the process of raising and slaughtering them for our food, but to say that we shouldn't eat them at all is ridiculous. To say that humans "were not made to eat meat", is outrageous. Whether you look at it from an evolutionary standpoint, or a biblical one man has eaten meat since the very beginning. The comment that I thought was the most hilarious so far on this board was the person who said that "they (the animals) all have families...". You my dear confused meat deprived friend, are a nut job. There is an enormous difference between humans, and animals. Human life is far more valuable than that of animals. If you can't see that then I don't think there is any hope for you at all.

A eastern european scientist was recently killed by a bear in the field. A search party tracked down and killed a mating pair. On autopsy, what did they find? "The czech is in the male".

hey gigi cows milk isnt the only thing that causes mucus its a natural thing in our bodies and chicken eggs are not "unfertilized waste" as you call they are just the fertilized unborn chick cases that protect the little chickens i think youre the one who needs to do some online research and quit ranting about other mammals mammary glands and go get some of your own!!

Let's be accurate. The tiger didn't kill zoo patrons. She attacked jerks who had sneaked into the zoo, which was closed that day, and were tormenting her. She acted on instinct. They acted out of spite and viciousness. Anyone who torments wild animals should expect retaliation. As for pets, excuse me, "companion animals," very few of them are capable of surviving in the wild. They have been dependent on us for too many generations. Those few who can survive in the wild are dangerous to humans and domesticted animals. Think of the feral dogs in Australia, in this same article.
