According to a new study, women prefer brainy, creative men to jock types when looking for long-term relationships and one-night stands.

Unlike previous research on the topic, the study didn't simply ask women to rate qualities they found attractive in the opposite sex. Instead, the University of California at Davis's Psychology Department had 204 female university students watch videos of men performing various tasks of mental and physical dexterity, before having them rate each man on long- and short-term desirability.

Smart guys scored high as long-term mates, which was expected. What was not expected is that a man's intelligence also improved his chances of being appealing for a brief hook-up.

Handsome men who cross a reasonable threshold of intelligence are still the most desired. We hear this led many of the male researchers involved to view the results as bittersweet.
