Race is still a tricky minefield to traverse when it comes to dating, and perhaps no ethnic group is sicker of being fetishized by horny losers than Asian women. Everybody knows (or has been) that guy with the thing for Asian girls, but writer Kaitlyn Dreyling is here to put to rest the fantasy of the "submissive lotus flower" with the top 10 things you should never say to an Asian woman. (Remember, you want to have a happy ending, not turn her off with a stupid joke about one.)(Also check out 10 Things You Should Never Say to a Black Woman and 10 Things You Should Never Say to a Tall Woman.)
10. "Where are you from? No, where are you really from?" (There are such Asians that are actually born in America. Don't think we're all from "the Orient.")
9. "Ni Hao. Konnichiwa. Etc." (First of all, she might not be Chinese or Japanese. Secondly, she might only speak English. Thirdly, back to #10, some of us are actually born in America.)
8. "Do you date white (black, Latino) guys?" (If you're trying to see if you have a chance, we get that.)
7. "I've always wanted to marry an Asian woman." (Why? Because of the stereotypes of a submissive, cooking, sex slave? Clearly you have an Asian fetish.)
6. "My favorite food is sushi." (And I like pizza, so?)
Read the top five things you shouldn't say after the jump.
5. "My first girlfriend was Chinese/Japanese/Korean." (That just underscores you're a serial fetishist.)
4. "I have a black belt in karate." (I have a yoga class twice a week. Big deal.)
3. "Hey, China doll." (Not a compliment -- another form of stereotyping.)
2. "I'm better built than an Asian dude, if you know what I mean." (Fortunately, you won't need to prove that.)
1. "Me love you long time." (Guess what: Not every Asian woman worked during the Vietnam War as a hooker.)

Our company had hired a Japanese woman that was from Japan. I learned a couple of basic phrases like good morning and stuff like that. (just like I learned basic Spanish for our mexican employees) I did it to be nice, and as she was a married lady, it wasn't to be hitting on her. I would hate to have someone take it wrong.

a few things-
one-any white guy who's ever dated an Asian woman learns real fast that the stereotype is a myth-usually before it even gets to date one.
two-The "nei-hao" and "Konichiwa" happens all the time. What happens even more is the horrible attempt at "Shyeh-shyeh" -assuming that ALL Asians are Manderin speaking.NY is still dominated by Cantonese and Toisan people.
Three-I still hear ill-mannered white kids saying,"Ching-Chong," IN CHINATOWN!
This is in NYC,not some hick town.
(oh, and btw-I am not Asian, unless you count Cauc-Asian!)
As far as fetishes go, or "yellow fever?" Hey-some people like blondes, some like redheads, some like latinas, and some like Asians. So what?
It goes both ways. I know Asians who only date Whites. Nothing wrong with having a preferance.

I love these lists! Edutainment...
More! More! More interracial dating etiquette, if you please!
Hows about Things Not To Say ToAn Irish Person e.g. Are leprechauns real? I've actually been asked that by an American, without a hint of irony in her voice. Hilarious.
And don't ask us about our drinking. Believe it or not, it's a little rude to enquire about the alcoholic intake of a person you've just met.... even though we drink a lot

All my young life I only dated american/white women. In my 30's I married and it was to an asian (filipina) woman. I don't think it was a fetish ... I thought she was the nicest and prettiest girl I had a shot at building a future with. We traveled to asia several times and let me tell you the questions and comments I get there would be considered over the top racism here in LA - not just on occasion but in almost every conversation with a new person I would meet. The only exception would be if I was speaking to asians that had been to europe or the US for extended periods . They would just converse normally . Through out all asia I did notice that they do not like black people . I would always ask "why" and I would say almost all the black people I know are nice people just going through their life doing the best they can , like everyone else... I would get replies like " they are dirty !?" Actually being a white guy I'm the smallest minority in the world (of all major races) So to respond to this article , as someone that has traveled extensively racism and stereotyping towards other races in asia is so much more extreme , than in the US and europe that its not even worth comparing . This article is probably being commented on by asians in the US that are just not attractive or personable and have a "fetish" for overreacting . ALL the white and asian people I know get along and intermingle so well that you wouldn't even know by their interactions that they were of different ethnic backgrounds.

just last weekend i was visiting some 40 odd friends in cleveland, ohio. the heartland of america! being a buckeye alum and a fanatic of the mundane blah atmosphere of ohio compared to cramped, high-stress nj, i was very excited for the fourth of july weekend. this was cut short on saturday night when me and 2 friends (also asian) were arrested for absolutely nothing! for being asian and having a damn good time at a club. since when was it a crime to spend hundreds of dollars at the bar and to have a loud, good time with 40 of your friends?
so while in the back of the cruiser (my first time at age 29) the two cops in front are going off about asians. straight up racist. end of story. look into these guys. the cleveland police academy is not doing there jobs on teaching the code of ethics. how are we supposed to obey the law when we have idiots who enforce it????

i guess i have an "asian fetish". Even though for it to be a fetish, it has to almost be a necessity in any sexual situation for and individual. So i guess i dont by those standards. But i have always perffered asian women, but i was never attracted to them because of the steryotypes. the attraction was more the physical beauty than the stigma that goes with the race. so because im more attracted to an asian woman than another race does that truly make me perverted. it would be like saying that someone is perverted because they are attracted to tall people or a brunette.

I have a Filipino friend who lives here in the Philadelphia suburbs. Let me tell you a true story about an incident that once happened to him.
He once overheard someone on the streets of Philly, talking to a friend, refer to him as a "gook".
My friend turned around and told the two, "Get it right - I'm not a gook, I'm a Flip!"
I also have a friend in San Francisco who is third-generation "ABC", or "American-Born Chinese". He has no accent other than pure northern California. He speaks no Asian languages.
His wife, however, has the Asian accent and speaks the "mother tongue". His 4 daughters (ranging from elementary to high school) have no accent and don't speak the "mother tongue".

As is normally expected in these forums, people explin the things they have experienced and Caucasians can't believe it is still going on. You are right, race relations are very much improved since the 70's but we are not at full equality yet. If we were, there would no need for all states to have adjuncts to their laws for hate crimes.
Just accept the fact that you may personally be enlightened to the wrongs of your ancestors, but not all Caucasians have reached that point yet. Best example-in the face of producing a legitimate birth certificate, there are still Republican nut jobs saying President Obama is not a US citizen. That is racism, nothing less.

Hey, I just like Asians because I think they are lovely. I get kidded at work because of my supposed 'yellow fever' but my friends that like large breasted woman look NEVER get singled out as having some strange fetish.
But that is ok and yah, I sometimes ask Asians what their cultural background is but I have learned to be careful. Asian American woman are the most sensitive in the world. Your looks single you out, I get that. But when you obviously speak perfect english, I know you were probably born in America. We are not retards, ok. Calm down a bit...I personally don't think it is too hard to tell if someone is a dumb hick or just curious where your parents or grandparents came from.
All my life, it was pretty common place to talk about my German heritage but for some reason most Americans of Asian descent just seem to be over sensitive. I don't see that with Mexicans or Americans of Hispanic background. Seriously.
Be proud of where your ancestors came from!

Agreed. But, starting a conversation with "Where are you from?" "No, really, WHERE ARE YOU FROM?" is kind of a dick move.

First of all, who can honestly say they don't hold any active stereotypes regarding another group of people?
Get over yourself, quit being offended and move on. I've been asked some of those questions and I try to act rationally. If they ask what Chinky country am I from, I answer truthfully without sarcasm. If it's a ignorant frat boy asking, I'd just tell them to shut up else I'll Kung Fu his butt (like I really know any martial art forms).

The author makes a bit of an assumption, too. An Asian in America is not the same as an Asian in, well, Asia. That is, yes, I identify as "Asian," but that's secondary to my being American.
Yes, there are Asians in Asia. There are Asians in America. And then there are Asian Americans (Americans born and raised here who have Asian ancestry). I prefer "American of [insert your Asian ethnicity here] descent."
Think I'm being nitpicky? Well, I don't appreciate complete strangers approaching me and telling me I shouldn't care about the local issues of the day because I'm not American when I have was born and raised here and don't know any other country. Yes, it's happened, and the person making the assumption did so based solely on my appearance.

I've gotten something close to #6:
"Do you know how to make orange chicken? I love orange chicken. Have you ever had Panda Express?"
Yeah, first of all, that's not real Chinese food. Secondly, I'm not even Chinese.

How bout Asian women having fetishes for white men? Clearly Kaitlin has one! Why do we need this list at all? Are you in need of even more validation from a white man?

By saying all men who have an interest in Asian women are "horny losers" is a stereotype in of its self. Meanwhile you complain about these men being stereotypical.
Also i have to agree with the other comments made- the entire article is dated and most people dont act like this. And who uses the world stereotype anymore OMG so 80s.
Your article is NOT informative nor does it provide any value for readers, its just a reflection of you and your poor judgment in the men you have dated. And because you can't pick good quality of men, you hate yourself for it and feel you have to lash out and call them "horny losers".
Nice try but this article is pretty transparent - you are a jaded old women who is alone and owns 2 cats and failed at finding a man to love you.
