Humans have unique, genetically determined "odortypes" which remain constant no matter what they eat.In an attempt to learn more about our aromatic essences, researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center trained mice to use their sense of smell to identify individual odortypes in other mice. They found that the sensor mice were able to detect the underlying odortype even after dietary changes.
"These findings indicate that biologically based odorprints, like fingerprints, could be a reliable way to identify individuals," said Jae Kwak, a Monell chemist.
