(Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.)

Unhappy people spend 25 hours a week watching television, while more contented folks only spend 19.

A team of sociologists from the University of Maryland came to this conclusion after reviewing the General Social Survey of 30,000 American adults. This 30 percent difference held even after taking into account age, income, marital status and education.

The researchers acknowledged this contradicts other studies which have found watching television actually makes people happy. "The conflicting data suggest that TV may provide viewers with short-run pleasure, but at the expense of long-term malaise," said study author John Robinson. He also hypothesizes that the extra television viewing could mean less time for more fulfilling activities like exercise and sex.

We find that argument a little confusing, given that we are always able to watch TV while we exercise and have sex.
