Ulysses Milana, 23, knew that the Marine Corps has no place for chubby recruits. In fact, when Army and Navy officers looked at his 330-pound frame nearly a year ago, they told him there was no way he could join up unless he lost some serious weight.

And so he did. Milana lost over 40 percent of his body weight -- 140 pounds -- in the course of 11 months during his quest to join the military. He lost approximately 20 pounds per month by changing his diet, giving up beer and going to the gym.

Milana claims the most difficult part was giving up beer. "It was really hard. You see all your friends drinking beer, and you're like, 'Oh, man, I want one.'"

Earlier this week, Milana left Lewiston, Maine for boot camp in Parris Island, S.C., to be screamed at by sadistic drill sergeants and made "Marine Tough." At that point, we imagine he'll be able to burn off the extra calories even if he raises a brew every now and then.
