The ubiquity of text messaging hasn't done much for this generation's literary aspirations, but, as two British surgeons recently proved, it can be extremely valuable to the medical profession.David Nott was volunteering with the humanitarian organization in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo last month when he was called on to help a 16-year-old boy. The shooting victim had just six inches of the severed arm remaining and the wound was dangerously infected. Nott knew he had to perform a rare forequarter amputation -- removing the collarbone and shoulder blade -- in order to save the teenager's life.
The only problem was that Nott had never performed the operation before. So he did what all of us do when faced with a tricky situation in a strange place -- he texted a friend.
Specifically, he got in touch with colleague Meirion Thomas, who had experience with the procedure. "I texted him and he texted back step by step instructions on how to do it," explains Nott. "He would have died without it so I took a deep breath and followed [them] to the letter."
Despite only having a pint of spare blood to work with, and rudimentary equipment, the operation was a success and the boy has apparently recovered well from his ordeal, meaning the last message probably ended with a smiley emoticon.

Amazing Rescues
Jesús García Corona was a Mexican railroad engineer who was killed trying to keep a train loaded with dynamite from exploding near Nacozari de García, Sonora, in 1907. García drove the train at full-steam six kilometers out of the town before the dynamite exploded, killing him and 12 other railwaymen and bystanders, but sparing the population of the mining town.

Prinsendam Rescue A fire broke out on the Dutch cruise vessel Prinsendam off Ketchikan, Alaska on 4 October 1980. The Prinsendam was 130 miles from the nearest airstrip. The cruise ship's captain ordered the ship abandoned and the passengers, many elderly, left the ship in the lifeboats. Coast Guard and Canadian helicopters and the cutters Boutwell, Mellon, and Woodrush responded in concert with other vessels in the area. The passenger vessel later capsized and sank. The rescue is particularly important because of the distance traveled by the rescuers, the coordination of independent organizations and the fact that all 520 passengers and crew and crew were rescued without loss of life or serious injury.

Coast Guard's Hurricane Katrina effort Search and rescue operations alone saved 24,135 lives from imminent danger, usually off the roofs of the victims' homes as flood waters lapped at their feet. Coast Guardsmen "evacuated to safety" 9,409 patients from local hospitals. In total, 33,545 souls were saved. Seventy-six Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary aircraft took part in the rescues. They flew 1,817 sorties with a total flight time of 4,291.3 hours in the air. The air crews saved 12,535. A total of 42 cutters and 131 small boats also participated, with their crews rescuing 21,200. Over 5,000 Coast Guardsmen served in Katrina operations.

There are children around the world in dire straits and many are available for adoption. I adopted 4 girls from Korea. The 11 year old's parents both had leprosy and the 15 year old's mother was in and out of a mental hospital. We were military stationed in Seoul at the time and we adopted girls 5, 10, 11 and 15. The 15 year old spoke almost NO English when I adopted her but she graduated from high school an honor student, then got an ROTC scholarship, graduated from university as a math major and was then commissioned a 2LT in the US Army. She served in Iraq and was later stationed in Korea where she was able to see her Korean parents once more...and I encouraged it. Her letters and email to me are always signed, 'I adore you!'
MY ONE REGRET IS NOT ADOPTING MORE!! Here's a great site with American kids waiting to be adopted: www. adoptuskids.com.

What a nice story, I LOVE people like you. If I could afford it I would love to adopt some babies or children who needs a good home. I want to congradulate you and your family. Happy Holidays and GOD will always be there for you and your family. There should be more people like you, I just wish I could do it. I see these shows on TV and I just want to reach in and take them home with me. Bless you forever :o)

The mind boggles at how modern technology and communications can save lives even at a distance. We read so much about the abuses, but reading a story like this puts everything in a whole new positive perspective.

I asked for help at the police station to go check up on my future husband who had a triple bypass surgery and that he is diabetic and they never did, I called every hour and they promise to check up on him and they promised to call me back and they never did and the next morning, I BEGGED and CRIED again because he was not returning my calls and I was about to get a plane ticket to where my future husband was and I got a called that we was dead more than 12 hrs, Im in the middle of suing the police station because they wouldnt listen to me. The POLICE dont care about you anymore. They think they are all that but their not. I no longer trust anyone thanks to the POLICE. I lost the LOVE of my life and my kids lost their brand new Daddy that they grew to love (more than their own deadbeat dad)so now I have to wait til the day I die so i can get off this miserable freakin planet. Again POLICE DEPATMENT, THANKS FOR IGNORING MY PLEA to save my futture Husband and for taking my childrens father away.

Wow. I feel really bad for you. You seem to be living a tortured existence. For the sake of your children you need to get help. Focus on the Family is an amazing Christian organization who can point you in the direction of people who can help you. Again, for the sake of your children and so you can be healthy mentally to support them, you should call. Please.

I agree with the above comment.
I am so sorry for you but please do not forget your children in all this. The anger you have can get in the way of your parenting and the love your children need. Go to God on this, have faith , believe that he can change your life for the good, he will.
I am not trying to be harsh but you may be fantasizing too much on how wonderful your new life would have been , you will never know but generally things do not turn out as lovely as we think they will i.e. your first marriage.
Please do not rehash what could have been, it probably will not help you and it might have been a let down too. I am so sorry for you.
Many police departments have sincere and wonderful workers, but this incident would show such a lack of responsibility. I am glad that you are taking appropriate measures to help this community's future.
I will keep you in my prayers.

I would be interested in what city that you are dealing with. You said you called every hour but they never did anything. Do you live somewhere else? Finally, are you so distraught that because of one or two lazy jerks that you have indicted all the 1/2 million law enforcement people?
I also agree with Vickie, get some help.
