According to a new study, maxing out credit cards is how many men deal with their evolutionary desire to attract multiple sexual partners.

Researchers from the University of Michigan surveyed the financial habits of more than 400 men and women. They discovered that men who agreed that they "always live within my income range" or "set aside 10 percent for savings" had less -- and desired less -- sexual partners than the big spenders. For women, financial consumption had no correlation to past or future mates.

"Men in the ancestral environment were valued if they were good providers," said study leader Daniel Kruger. "Now we have this new consumer culture, so basically we show our potential through the consumer goods that we purchase." Kruger added that these evolutionary urges have had an "influence" on the current economic crisis.

So it looks like if we are going to get out if this mess, some bad evolutionary habits need to be broken. Ladies, you can do your part by only sleeping with poor blogger types.

At least if you're going to overspend, your money can be as interesting as the cash creations in this gallery.
