(Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.)

Canada is the most welcoming country in the world for relocating foreigners.

HSBC Bank asked over 2,000 ex-pats in 48 different countries to rate their new nation of residence on ability to befriend locals, ease in joining community groups, number who learned the language and percentage that bought property.

Germany and Australia followed Canada in the two and three spots respectively, while the United States placed sixth. Defying all stereotypes, France clocked in as the ninth most friendly nation. China pulled up the rear, although much of that can be attributed to having a difficult language to learn, and a culture that can be confusing to Westerners.

Though not mentioned by name in the survey results, we suspect Canada friendliness is a direct result of free health care, king-sized slabs of bacon and the fact that Celine Dion now resides in the States.
