More and more research has shown that the sexual side effects from antidepressants are under-reported on the drugs' labels. While the warning label on Prozac claims a four percent chance of sexual side effects and Paxil's literature cites between a zero and 28 percent likelihood, new studies have found that these and other antidepressants adversely effect the sex lives of up to 50 percent of those taking them. Furthermore, these unfortunate and embarrassing symptoms sometimes remain, even after the patient goes off the drug.
Common sexual side effects include lack of libido, numbness and stalled arousal. In fact, antidepressants are so effective at putting a damper on arousal, that they have become a leading treatment for premature ejaculation.
(If that last part becomes popular knowledge, watch out -- Prozac may overtake pot as the most popular recreational drug among high school boys.)
What else can affect your sex life (at least the procreational side)? Check the gallery below for some myths and facts about low sperm count.
Low Sperm Count Myths
Steriod Use Legit: Any kind of testosterone supplementation including anabolic steroids -- the kind used by athletes and the insanely vain -- can decrease testicular function and thus dramatically reduce fertility. (For more details, see Dr. Ken's article on the effects of steroids.)

Drinking Mountain Dew Bogus: Doing the Dew won't affect your sperm count in any way. There have been rumors about other soft drinks, as well, and these are also incorrect. (Decreasing soda intake is worth considering given the empty calories and potentially harmful chemicals the drinks often contain.)

Plastics Legit: Certain chemicals found in consumer products are associated with impaired sperm production. 1. Phthalates are nearly ubiquitous in household products, such as food packaging, shower curtains, coatings on medicines, shampoos and many others. 2. Bis-phenol A is already banned in some countries (but not in the U.S.). It's a chemical found in polycarbonate plastics, the type used in the hard plastic water containers. These can be hard to avoid but some manufacturers are beginning to label their chemical-free products. To the extent you can, avoid eating, storing and microwaving foods and beverages in plastics.

Bicycle Seats Legit: Sitting on non-ergonomically shaped bicycle seats for prolonged periods can do two things. 1. They can raise your scrotal temperature, which can decrease sperm production. 2. They can damage the blood vessels that carry blood (i.e., nutrients) to the testicles. Softer seats and taking breaks can help you avoid this.

Keeping a cell phone in your front pocket Legit: It has been repeatedly demonstrated that cell phone exposure can harm sperm function. In general, the farther you keep the cell phone away from your boys, the better. (For more details, see Dr. Ken's article on the effects of cell-phone use.)

Caffeine Bogus: Shooting blanks is not likely to occur as a result of coffee, tea or even No-Doz. Excessive intake may have a very slight effect, but your cup of morning of coffee won't have any meaningful impact.

Smoking Legit: Men who smoke cigarettes are more likely to have lowered sperm counts. Yet another reason to stop paying the big tobacco corporations to poison you.
AP
Excessive masturbation Bogus: Masturbation will not cause infertility or, for that matter, blindness or hairy palms. If it did, the human race would have died out long ago.

Smoking marijuana Legit: Chronic and frequent marijuana use impairs sperm and lowers sperm count. It also lowers testosterone levels, which can lead to impotence, loss of interest in sex and gynecomastia, aka "man boobs." (For more details, see Dr. Ken's article on the causes of man boobs.)
Everett Collection
Regularly placing a laptop on your lap Legit: If you keep a laptop in your lap, the heat emitted can increase the temperature of the testicles and may consequently decrease sperm production. Keep the laptop on the desk or use a laptop board or pillow to create a buffer in between the computer and you.

This is so true. Cymbalta killed my ability to have an orgasm. Treating depression has made me more depressed!

Yup. I took Paxil and BuSpar for anxiety, and told my doc to lose the Paxil after my boyfriend and i were continually frustrated by my inability to have an orgasm. Wellbutrin has quite the opposite effect and when given in conjunction with meds such as Paxil, Zoloft, or Prozac, can counter some of these side effects.

This is a fact. I was given antidepressants to replace the benzo's that I had becme addicted to. The antidepressants destroyed my ability to have an orgasm, and I was only in my early 50's at the time. After getting off the antidepressants, Sex never felt the same again. Don't take them, find another way to combat your depression. They also cause people to commit sucide.

I would hope that "suicidal & homicidal behavior" as a side-effect to these horrible drugs would be enough to prevent the over prescribing/usage of them, but i'll be glad if this article makes even one person go thru the weaning process (A MUST with these drugs!!)to get off this kill-pill. My younger brother was 28 years old and the most optimistic, faith-filled guy.... Then he hung himself on Mothers day...surrounded by to-do lists, a phone book open to "pharmacies", and a dead cell phone. Thanks Paxil. See for yourselves, google the words "paxil" and "suicide" and ask yourself why on earth our FDA allows this crap to be handed out like candy. Sad, very very sad.

I'm 58 and have been on Prozac for 18 years and it has saved my life. Everytime I go off of it I start planning suicide - for me it's strickly chemical.
Every single time I have had sex for the last 25 years I have had a fantastic orgasim. However, I very seldom want to have sex - which I contribute to Prozac. I give my husband all the credit because he is willing to always initiate it and before it's over I'm in the ball game all the way!

My experience has turned positive in the long run. For a long time Paxil and later Cymbalta had a big damper on my sexuality, and ability to reach climax. Even when I got there, the sensation was considerably dulled. After a long while, though, the effect has worn off, full sensation has returned, and my capacity has even increased. I had no choice but to stay on Cymbalta, and now it's working on my pain disease and not interfering sexually at all. I am in my late 50s, male.

Took paxil for awhile and could have sex for hours and hours without ever finishing the women liked it until they started to get raw. That is no fun when you are trying to get better mentally.

I'm 24 and am currently seeking treatment for depression. I'm still in college and while I am not a psych major, my major does focus a lot on psych in the context of family dynamics, social norms, child development, essentially very broad terms. I've even taken a few clinical psych classes so I feel well informed enough to know what appeals to me as far as therapy approaches and the kind of therapist I think would be most beneficial to me, but my mom has been pressuring me a lot to just find a doc who will write me a script for whatever the antidepressant du jour is. This angers and saddens me and I feel may very well be one of the root causes of my depression-my mom just wants to dope me up so I'll be easier to deal with regardless of what affect it may have on me in the long run. What I'm really trying to say is that I absolutely believe prescriptions and drug treatments should be a last resort, try everything else first. Of course they work for some people and I'm certainly not completely anti-prescription, but I still believe that you should exhaust all non-drug treatment options first, the whole point is finding what works best for someone on an individual level, especially when it comes to the psyche or learning disabilities.
