Every man who grew up during the age of Hulk Hogan, Ricky Steamboat and Lex Luger wanted to one day have veins popping out of his arms and biceps bigger than his head. Mickey Rourke got to live that dream -- about 30 years too late. For Darren Aronofsky's new movie, "The Wrestler," the 52-year-old Rourke put on 33 lbs. of muscle to play a down-and-out former 1980s wrestling superstar. For the role, Rourke spent seven months training everyday with an ex-Israeli cage fighter, stuffing his face with protein and occasionally making trips to the hospital for MRIs. If this sounds like a small price to pay to look like a massive '80s grappler, you're in luck, because Mickey Rourke gave us a step-by-step on what to do to get the physique of a TV wrestling God.
Train all day, everyday, for seven months
"We did a two-mile run on the beach every morning and went back and went back to sleep. Then we got up a little later and went and lifted weights for an hour an a half and had lunch. A little while later we'd do cardio for about 45 minutes. And then in the evenings we'd go back to the gym and lift weights. Then we'd have about an hour and a half, two hours of wrestling practice. This went on for seven months."

What you need to eat, constantly, every day
"Basically I had to go from 192 pounds to 235, so it consisted of eating between six to seven high protein, low carb meals a day, lots of supplements and 2-3 protein shakes that were really king size.
We'd have like 12 egg whites in the morning, chicken breasts and then a banana with two scoops of peanut butter and a sh*tload of supplements. We'd have like a thin piece of steak with a salad and vegetables and a cup of rice and then we'd have a gigantic protein shake. Maybe after that we'd have two more scoops of peanut butter and an apple or some kind of piece of fruit. Then I'd have my last two meals and a giant protein shake at night."
When you get sick of eating, swap it up and keep eating
"It got to the point where, up until when I got to 217 lbs. I'd been OK with all this eating, but after that I couldn't eat six meals so I'd eat four and I couldn't drink three shakes so I'd have one. It was a constant battle for me to get that heavy. From 217 to 220 lbs. I just couldn't put in on. So we kind of changed it around and we started going from fish to red meat. We started going from egg whites to regular eggs."
Forget GNC, get your own doctor
"Pretty much we were just doubling up on amino acids and doing B12 shots maybe three days a week to have the extra energy to last. I was also doing this thing with an anti-aging doctor called a drip. What he does is he does a urine and blood test, because everyone is deficient in different things, calcium or potassium or something like that. So we'd do the drip and that would help us get a little more energy."
Treat injuries like an old-school boxer
While training for "The Wrestler," Rourke had a "pretty severe neck injury," plus a reoccurring ACL injury and he blew out a disc in his back. His solution? Two hour massages.
"Basically I was getting a two-hour massage every evening, like five days a week. I live in a three-story walk up and the trainer had to help push me up the stairs and hold my arm to get down the stairs and go to work. It hurt to breathe. Darren insisted that I do all my own stunts. It wasn't like it was a joy to go to work everyday."

Anyone who thinks he did this at his age without anabolics is fooling themselves because for whatever reason they can't face the reality of it. I don't know, maybe they absolutely love Mr. Rourke and can't fathom him doing illegal substances, or people just want to believe in the magic of it all, but this transformation did not happen at his age without steroids especially with that amount of ridiculous over training.

Yes, he had to have done major steroids, especially at his age. But shouldn't the fact that he risked his health for his art make him even more Oscar worthy? Surely dosing out on 'roids beats the hell out of DeNiro gaining 40 lbs for raging Bull by overeating.

think he used steroids? the testicles shrink after time, the roid rages are a delight. let's ask lyle alzado what his opinion is. oh, wait, he died from brain cancer years ago. or ask lex luger about what he's doing now and how steroids and other substances got him to where he is now.

Rourke Looks great. but anyone who is saying that he did this naturally is fooling themselves. This definitely does not take away from the fact that one would still ahve to train like a maniac to get in that type of shape in under 7 months. But truth be told it would be hard for a 25 year old to pack on 30 pounds of muscle naturally let alone a 50 year old man. Rourke is known for taking steroids from time to time. It takes nothing away from him (half of hollywood does them, if your career depended on your physique and looks wouldn't you? think Butler in 300, Pitt in Troy (his face grew) Jackman in Wolverine, Mathew Mconaughy (in practically every movie lol especially reign of fire) Eric Banner in Troy, Ving Rhames, and the list will go on and on) again like I said takes nothing away from them, under the supervision of a doctor its as safe as taking vitamins. But make no mistake that was def NOT done naturally. If you knew about steroids you can see the onset of small lumps of gyno around his nipples int he "OFF THE TOP ROPE JIMMY SNUKKA MOVE" For someone at that age to get that shape you MUST do something thats either anabolic or HGH. its just a fact and any doctor will tell you so. A mans body outside of its prime age (20-mid 30's) has a hard time sustaining muscle and growing because of the lack of testosterone and Growth hormone. Sorry fellas the reality of it is he def took something to help him. All and all looks like a sick movie can't wait till it comes out. People make it seem as if steroids and HGH are so taboo. Stallone said it best, in 10 years everyone will be doing it just to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

You can take all the protein and steroids in the world but unless you work hard in the gym you won't see much muscle growth. These guys have to work their butts off in the gym. So why not give credit where it is due and stop being jealous.

He went to an anti aging doctor... that's the "legal" way to obtain growth hormone. At an anti aging clinic they will prescribe it to or write you a referral for real doctor to prescribe the drug. As long as you claim you have a hormonal imbalance and do not produce enough testosterone it is perfectly legal. Check out the documentary "Bigger Stronger Faster" it explains all the loopholes on how to do things that Mr. Rourke had accomplished through modern medicine and hard work. It is expensive though...

People are so used to seeing fat out of shape people that it has become normal. Now when someone does have a nice build people critisize and yell steroids. Fat is NOT normal. The human body was meant to be worked. Do the P90X workout for a few months and you will see first hand that you can get ripped in a short period of time. Way to go Mickyey !

The poster stating steroids and overtraining is dead on. He was working out way too much to grow without steroids. The body grows while resting, not weight training twice a day, running, and doing more lifting in the ring. He probably would have put the size on in half the time with proper training. Just goes to show that he was obviously being trained by a moron

It was sad to see Mickey Rourke simply implode and destroy his career. He is a very talented actor, who destroyed his face with boxing and catastrophic plastic surgery. He always seemed like a nice guy through it all, and his peers seem to like him. His comeback is amazing and well-deserved, and I wish him the best.

Children, don't fight! If Mickey Rourke was taking steroids, he would be the first to tell you. The man does not have an edit button. He did it the hard way and he deserves his award. Welcome back, Mickey! You might be crazy, but that is not always a bad thing.

biological and physiological facts... at his age it is IMPOSSIBLE to gain 30 lbs of muscle in less than 5-6 years of proper diet and training. He obviously used some anabolic 'supplements', which are widely available, to gain the 30 lbs - if in fact is was 'all muscle'. The body does nor produce high enough levels of GH or testosterone after say 35 to accomplish this kind of feat. As for medical supervision or not... kind of a russian roulette game if he doesn't know what he is doing...
