Career women are less likely to have classic hourglass figures, due to stress associated with their jobs.Researchers from the University of Utah looked at ladies from cultures all around the world, and found that working women tend to carry fat around their stomachs, rather than their hips.
Previous studies have shown that a waist-to-hip ratio of .7 is most desirable, but the Utah team found the average ratio for career gals to be around .8. Anthropologist Elizabeth Cashdan believes the bodies of these bread winners produce more of the hormone androgen, which makes the female physically stronger and more able to handle workplace stress, but also leaves them with a "straight up and down" figure.
Some people may actually be celebrating the end of the hourglass figure. For our part, upon hearing of this horrifying trend, we immediately began work on an "Inconvenient Truth"-style presentation.
If you need any further evidence of our love for hourglass shapes, check out the big beautiful women below.

what constitutes work for the "researchers"?? did they ONLY look at women in "male dominated" jobs? did the measure prostitutes? nurses? teachers? homemakers?
women have ALWAYS worked...even "homemakers" work...with the TINY, TINY exception of "well-to-do" women who hire other women to do their work...

Nurses!!??? This is one of the most demanding (mentally and physically) and stressful jobs out there undrgrndgirl. How dare you campare it to the stress level of a homemaker. I've done both and the homemaker thing was a walk in the park compared to nursing.

I've visited many people in hospitals. The nurses spend 45 minutes of every hour gabbing and blabbing at the nurses station, then run around like idiots for 15 minutes. Then start over with another 45 minute break. Then they complain they don't have enough staff. You know the saying? "Men work til setting sun, but women's work is never done"? That's because of poor organization.

It's disgusting that some of those women are considered plus-size. Some of those women are overweight, but a good portion of them had healthy body shapes. Something's wrong with the industry...

They're "plus-sized" because they're overweight. Which is what it basically means. If they're bigger than "skinny", they're pretty much plus-sized.

The best body type is the body you would feel comfortable walking around in naked. Personal taste, personal choice. I know what it's like to try and lose weight. I lost 47 pounds in 6 weeks using the Rapidthin diet at www.rapidthin.com. Good luck to all. Use what works for you.

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN THE "REUBENESQUE" FIGURE WAS IT..ROUND, SOFT BROADS WITH PLUMP TUMMIES! NOW THE LOOK IS CONCENTRATION CAMP CHIC - THE ANOREXIC GLOW, THE DISAPPEARING ACT. PERSONALLY AN ATHELETIC FIGURE ON A GIRL/WOMAN IS IDEAL- A SPARTAN LOOK- HEALTHY, ACTIVE,STRONG...A WOMAN NEEDS THIS FRAME IN THE 21ST. CENTURY.

I prefer Rubeneque over skinny all the time. I don't know how the concetration camp look ever came to be so popular. Unless it has something to do with looking youthful, as in perpetual teenager. And that right there is a reflection of an idiotically immature and shallow culture.

I would rather keep my hourglass figure then look like a thirteen year old boy. And no I am not over weight. I could care less to look like everyone in Hollywood. Not including some of the hourglass shaped stars that are proud!
If a guy doesn't like that I have curves then he can go find someone else. I am not going to live my life how a magazine tells me too. Some girls just want to fit in with what everyone else is doing.
I do what I want. You don't like it ohh well. Now I am going to go enjoy a cookie and not run to the toilet!!!

I am with you. I have no desire to look like a little boy. I enjoy my curves and think that a curvy look is far more desirable than the pixie stick look.

Amen!
I can't stand it when a woman won't eat because she wants to "watch her figure".
I am by no means overweight, but I would much rather eat some good food and have these curves than be a frail little thing. Gotta have some curves!
If my man wanted a girl with the body of a ten-year-old boy, he might as well go date the ten-year-old boy.
The "Spartan" body is ideal for healthy children too!

Had I known then that I looked as good as I know now, I wouldn't have given up on my self. Being a twenty something in the mid-70s and 80s, I was always told I was fat and overweight. I was nearly 5'8" and weighted 145 lbs. I had a 42" bust, a 29" waist and a 37" hip, face and hair like Jane Seymour, and long 'movie star'(as a friend called them) legs. But according to 'the powers the be", I was fat. Fortunately I married a man who loved me for what I was and despite what I became weight-wise. Please Please Please promote these plus size models so that young girls get a more realistic idea of what beauty is. Good health first, appearance next, and to remember size is only a number.

Kate? 5'8 and 145 lbs is slim! 5'8 is tall and the taller a person is the more they weigh but again, for that height that is nice and slender.

It saddens me to know that these women in the pictures are considered PLUS SIZE. Not even ONE picture that I saw of these women appeared overweight to me. They appear to be your average size woman that walk the streets every day. This is the reason we have all of the eating disorders today, and so many woman have such low self esteem. The women all seem healthy and beautiful.

I work full time and go to school full time and I have a 4 month old boy. With all this running around and studying I do, I still make time to go to the gym 40 minutes a day. People are making up these excuses as to why the hourglass figure is being killed. Hollywood and the media is killing the hourglass figure. People see a woman with a big butt, small waist, and big boobs and they think she's fat. Americans are really pathetic with this topic. I have an hourglass figure and am happy with it. Too bad people aren't into this anymore
