Career women are less likely to have classic hourglass figures, due to stress associated with their jobs.Researchers from the University of Utah looked at ladies from cultures all around the world, and found that working women tend to carry fat around their stomachs, rather than their hips.
Previous studies have shown that a waist-to-hip ratio of .7 is most desirable, but the Utah team found the average ratio for career gals to be around .8. Anthropologist Elizabeth Cashdan believes the bodies of these bread winners produce more of the hormone androgen, which makes the female physically stronger and more able to handle workplace stress, but also leaves them with a "straight up and down" figure.
Some people may actually be celebrating the end of the hourglass figure. For our part, upon hearing of this horrifying trend, we immediately began work on an "Inconvenient Truth"-style presentation.
If you need any further evidence of our love for hourglass shapes, check out the big beautiful women below.

I have to agree with most of the comments on this topic. Humans, as a general rule, are the most shallow things on this planet. So, it's no surprise that the "twig" or "stick figure" ideal was in. However, after watching Spanish officials tell some runway models they couldn't walk the runway in a show, I think it's high time we take a look at the real issue, which (in my opiniion) seems to be eternal youth. Ain't gonna happen, so we need to get over it and quick. People need to choose the best for their own self-esteem.

Isn't it ironic how these liberals who preach "open-mindedness" and "acceptance"spend so much energy and time judging others on their appearance? Just flip through the "news" articles in aol. The majority of the "news" items refers to Hollywood losers and athletes. And please - not one more story about Obama's vacation house - is this a sign of what to expect for the next 4 years???

I use to be 118# and 5'6". Now after 60 years and 2 back surgeries, I'm 235# and 5'4 1/2". I hate my weight, but will try to get down to 145# when the doctor allows me to try. I don't loose weight on a 1000 cal. diet, I use a 800 ADA diet. I inherited a big arse from my maternal grandmother. When I weighed 118#, my waist was 24 1/2 inches with a 38 inch hip. Every one wanted me to lose weight, all they could see was my big arse. I was sick which caused the weight loss, now that I am almost well, they still complain about my what....arse. Things never change.

SKW, you're an idiot if you think nurses spend 45 minutes out of every hour "gabbing and blabbing" and not working. Nurses are, for the most part, highly motivated, extremely hard working professionals, on whom the injured and ill rely for their recovery, even their lives. You have NO idea what you're talking about. But, then, isn't ignorance bliss?

Wouldn't it be nice if researchers spent their time and money finding cures for common ailments instead of useless studies such as this one? Get your priorities straightened out!!!

I have nothing against healthy people of size. But the reality is, this is not about an anorexic society" it is about an increasing acceptance of gross obesity. We now use PC words like "thick" and "full figured" to describe persons who are MEDICALLY overweight. This is not an esteem issue, it is a medical one. You can be at the far end of the medical range for your height, even a bit more and that's OK. And I have many overweight friends who are great people. But anyone will tell you, when a heavy person looses weight, they say how happy they are. I've never heard a healthy weight person get overweight and say they never want to be thin (healthy) again. We pretend that "average" is OK. We have changed sized so that what was a 7 30 years ago is now a 3. If you are wearing a 16 that used to be a 20, are you any less fat. And obesity is an epidemic. The medical results carry for years. Diabeties, high blood pressure, heart attacts. But we have to be PC and use nice terms for fat people. This obesity epidemic is costing Americans huge amounts of money and we pass it down to our children. They now are the number one obese group. We need to wake up. This is not about weight. It is about health. The AMA has guidelines. look them up. the further you are out, the more medical problems you will have in ALL aspects of your life. I'm tired of being told I'm skinny, when I'm not even at the low end of my Height/weight range. I'm more slightly past middle. But we are such a supper sized nation that it is ok to complain about people being down on "full figures" You're not full figured, you obese.

As a girl who, in today's society, would be considered fat, or as my friends like to say "curvy" i feel that more girls should just feel comfortable in their own skin. I have no problem saying that i wear a size 11 in jeans. I am comfortable with how i look. As long as you wear clothes that are befitting your shape it shouldn't matter if you arent a size 5 or such.

I have always been hourglass (.6 ratio when I was younger & currently a .729 ratio). In high school the "boys" rejected me as "fat" but the college men AND older chased me. I am so glad I never looked like a concentration camp victim. In the past Society has made me feel ashamed of being "different." Clothing is cut for the 15-year old "boy" body shape which women now covet. No one can mistake me for a boy when they look at me from behind :) . Most of these modern women diet to achieve the "boney" look and then get "implants" to give them what diet and exercise took away. They look like teenaged boys with breasts. I also have a business career which has a great amount of stress. Working a job is different than working as a housewife. For one thing, if you miss a deadline at home (like washing the floor) your husband won't "fire" you. As long as you have a working husband you'll always have food and clothing. The outside world isn't so kind to working women, so that's the kind of stress the article is talking about.

*Clicking through the "Favorite Plus Sized Models" pictures*
I think it's really sad that a lot of these women don't even look "plus sized" to me. This culture needs to be changed. It's stuff like this that makes beautiful women think they're not good enough and become anorexic. The media favors stick-thin celebs (even in kids' shows - we're raised to think like this from a very young age) and shoves them in our faces. Anf id a larger celeb ever MAKES it onto the radar, she is not known for her talent, but for her size. I would love to see a larger celeb called "25-year-old actress Jane Doe" rather than "25-year-old PLUS SIZED/CURVY actress Jane Doe," but I've given up all hope that the media will ever embrace a non-stick-thin celebrity.

By Disgusted by how some women are so insecure and catty
Well, even at 47 I do look like a little boy when I am really thin. I don't see anything wrong with it, and to cut people down for that body type, is just as bad as cutting people down who are overweight with curves. Why are women so catty?
