(Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.)

According to a new study, the more caffeine a person drinks the more likely they are to hallucinate.

Researchers at Durham University questioned non-smoking students about their caffeine consumption, and whether they sometimes hear voices or see and smell things that aren't there. Even after factoring out general stress levels, they found that those who drank three regular cups of coffee daily were three times more likely to hallucinate than those who consumed less than a half-a-cup a day.

The study's authors acknowledge the possibility that people who already suffer hallucinations drink more coffee, but still suggest there is a link between cortisol, a hormone enhanced by caffeine, and senses that detect things that aren't there.

This means that if you drink enough Folgers it may actually seem like it tastes good.
