Since times are tough, we've considered scrounging together the last of our savings to head somewhere warm -- like Hawaii.Unfortunately, other people have the same idea -- so much so that Hawaii is considering a new $100,000 program to fly homeless people back to the mainland. The program would target those who have come to Hawaii from the Continental U.S. and then became "stranded." Some critics say the proposal is just a ploy to get the homeless off the island, though the plan would make sense from a fiscal standpoint in that it would save on money put into homeless services.
One lawmaker expressed what we'd been thinking, telling his colleagues that people come to the island thinking they'll just be drinking a "mai tai on the beach." His implication was that this isn't true, so our alternate plan is to roast pigs on the beach and drink our mai tais elsewhere.
Are you homeless and "stranded" in Hawaii? Make yourself heard with clever signs like those in the gallery below.

The old "Take my wife, please!" It's a classic, though our friend here makes it his own.

He's a crafty one. Go ahead and give him a dollar.

See it's funny because he probably doesn't actually have a Lear Jet.

What if she's just rich? Will that work?

If only there were enough rich women go to around. Sigh.

Honesty is not always the best policy.

The Palo Alto homeless are apparently IBM people, rather than Mac people.

Can't say this sign makes us want to give this gentleman any money.

I agree with Char you are an ASS. Funny how this means of communication gives people courage to say the most offensive things. If it weren't for Africa you would not have a computer, a cell phone, the finest gold, diamonds, silver, other precious stones, matter of fact this country and others across the world would not have had ree labor to fuel capitalism. You may even have African blood in your veins. You should probably find out a little more about homelessness before you lay claim to where most of the homeless live, actually it is in the USA

Just to let you know often homeless people have jobs. They are just not high paying jobs. Especially with the current economy and housing situation. To get high paying jobs you need a higher education to get a higher education you need money...see the cycle? Don't assume that all homeless people are lazy and dont work. Minium wage does not cover the cost of living.

Sounds like a "Politically Correct" solution to the problem of homeless people who portray an image that the tourist industry doesn't want...
Are they going to "deport" native born Hawaians as well...there's a legal mess for you.
Money talks, and I bet the tourism folks get their way...Kalifornia wil take them...

California has enough Illegals thank you! If you randomly shot and killed ten people in my town only 3 would be here legally. I hate that we pay for them they wives and kids collect welfare and "husband supposedly isn't here working in a field or Denny's??" hmm there is some jobs that legal Americans could do in this economy

First of all, minimum wage was not set up for people to make a living on. It was established as a gap for people like students, etc. As far as education goes, it does take money, but it also can be free, as many people have learned. I got my Masters through grants and student loans, which I have paid back. If there is a drive to improve, it can be done. When people cry about being broke, lacking education, etc., I don't have much sympathy. It is easier to sit back and enjoy the monthly check and food stamps than to actually go out and earn their own keep. I've seen it oh so many times.

You're rather ignorant, aren't you...
Like Donna said, minimum wage isn't meant to be lived on. The sad thing is, a lot of people live on it because that's either all they can get right now, or because of disabilities. Not saying that first one's an extremely good excuse by any means, but it's a fact. I've been living on minimum wage since I graduated high school, delivering pizzas and working at a Gap store the next town over. I want to go to college, really badly, but according to the FAFSA I need parental information my parents aren't willing to give me, such as how much money is in their bank accounts. How pathetic is that, -I- want to go to school, but the government wants to know how much my -PARENTS- have in their stupid bank accounts??
Minimum wage is okay if you live in your mom's basement or something, because it isn't going to pay for the cost of living, even with two jobs. And even with two jobs, the chances of you losing them due to the economic situation are pretty dang good. And that is why I'm hoping and praying for a factory job I've got an interview for; pays $11 or so an hour at full-time status. I sure as hell hope I get it, else I'm gonna end up being another homeless statistic...

Great idea, Chris. Matter of fact, it's so great that after the military is done with "these guys", you can be next in line for "wound and ballistics testing" . What do you think of that? You volunteering?
