The seamless aluminum beer can turns 50 years old this month. That's right, just a half a century ago, the beer-drinking world suffered the ignominy of drinking suds through seamed steel cans. The fine folks in Golden, Colorado, changed all that back in 1958 and we've been celebrating the contents of the aluminum can ever since. Perhaps even more useful than what lies inside the can is the can itself -- it's recyclable, after all. And plenty of folks have put empty beer cans to astounding use.
Check out our gallery of amazing empties and dream of what you might do (aside from passing out) after you finish your next case of Coors, PBR, Black Label and/or Milwaukee's Best.

Tests show a strong connection between aluminum and memory loss. Alcohol causes memory loss too, so since the aluminum beer can and Alzheimers disease are about the same age, need we look any further for a cause?

i remember those seamed cans and every one had a can opener on a chain around their necks because there was a photo of paul newman with one. i remember how when they first came out with the pull tabs that came off and every one made like a beaded curtain to their bedroom door. sad when some of your finest moments have beer as a central theme

Yep. It wasn't an apartment unless you had pop-top chains and cheap tapestry curtains thumb tacked on the windows. And a black light. And a poster that said "War is not healthy for children and other living things".
