Whiskey has ruined lives, but few credit the strong stuff for saving them. Since we often praise the elixir for its benefits, it was wonderful to hear of a British man who survived on whiskey after being trapped under his sofa for two-and-a-half days.Joe Galliott from Yeovil, in the U.K., says he tripped over a telephone cord and fell on a sofa, collapsing the seating and pinning him face-down. Galliott has a back problem and was unable to get up, so he found himself without food or water for 60 hours. He could, however, reach a bottle of whiskey that had fallen in the incident.
"I could not crawl and the phone was out of reach. I didn't have the strength to shift anything," said Galliott. "I never had anything to drink except from the bottle of whiskey." Galliott was finally rescued when a neighbor's grandson stopped by to check in on him.
Question Raised: If you were trapped under a sofa for nearly three days with just one bottle of liquor, would you pick whiskey?
This is the first we've heard of life-saving liquor. We're a little more knowledgeable about deadly drinks ...
Most Dangerous Drinks
Ethanol/Grain Alcohol It is illegal to sell this 190-proof "drink" in California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington. Obviously, the liver has lobbyists in those states.

Moonshine Prohibition caused people to take all sorts of odd steps to get their buzz on. For those who took the Bo and Luke route, a shoddy brew included methanol (a.k.a. wood alcohol) that acts in a few hours and can cause blindness. Perhaps that allowed them to not realize they were making out with cousin Daisy.

Hjemmebrent Norway's Moonshine goes a bit further, being distilled to 96% alcohol. In Tara Grescoe's book "The Devil's Picnic," drinking hjemmebrent is described this way: "You were sober then you were drunk. It was grim, goal-oriented, and a little sad. And the hangover was like no other." Scary. We can't imagine anything worse than a PBR hangover.

Blood Religious groups and tribes, including the Suri of Ethiopia, have been drinking blood for centuries. For some it's a ritual, for others it's just a great way to risk contracting Hepatitis B and C.

Coca Cola Coca-Cola launched the disastrous "New Coke" in 1985, but in truth, the stuff we'd been consuming for decades was new. The true original version had cocaine in it. If Coca Cola still had cocaine in it, the world would be a sleepless wasteland of rambling teeth grinders.

Black Drink Made from roasted leaves of the Yaupon Holly, Native Americans males consumed the Black Drink in a ritualistic manner, substituting it for coffee or tea. They purged themselves after imbibing for hours at a time, leading to the berry's appealing Latin name, "Ilex vomitoria."

Jolt Cola Jolt Cola's slogan is "all the sugar and twice the caffeine." But if you consider that a few of the symptoms of caffeine overdose include restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, increased urination, gastrointestinal distress, muscle twitching, irritability, and irregular heart beat, a cold Jolt doesn't sound so good.

Bombes Enterprising bar owners in Greece originally came up with Bombes -- a mixture of alcohol and cheap, dangerous industrial spirits. These drinks are so lethal that the government had to step in, because the loss of bar patrons due to death wasn't enough to keep them from being served.

Bud Extra A couple of years back, someone at Budweiser came up with a plan to keep beer drinkers from passing out. They called it "B to the E," and injected it with ginseng and high levels caffeine. In June 2008, Anheuser-Busch pulled the product in response to public criticism, which was completely warranted.

Kumis Though not technically a danger to your physical health, there's something psychologically troubling about sipping Kumis, a booze made from fermented mare's milk. Russians have been drinking from the horse's teat for centuries, but we'll pass.

Actually this man is an alcoholic imbecile. The booze would have left him MORE dehydrated than otherwise, not less, and we can be confident that he tripped because he was s***faced to start with. It saddens me to hear about the survival of people who should be listed in the Darwin Awards.

Doug you are an retard my friend. Whiskey will not dehydrate someone faster than not having anything at all. my 5 year old son could pick this one up, WHISKEYS CONTAINS WATER!!

Doug,
While the alcohol may have left him slightly dehydrated it also provided him with calories, also needed to live.
And how do you know he was a alcoholic? Because he dropped a bottle of whiskey? Haven't you ever sat down on the couch to have a drink? The article also clearly states that he has a back problem that prevented him from getting up.
Perhaps some empathy is needed here.

Oh ferpetesake DOUG!! Put the big book down, stop assuming (because we all know what happens when you assume: you make an ass look bigger).
The man is alive! Yeay!! He probably had time to commune with God thanks to his friend Jack Daniels!

It's true, you would think it would have left him more dehydrated tho it must have been enough calories and liquid to save his life. You may be right in your assumption of why he tripped, though one can only make assumptions. I think it's amazing he survived!

Emma you are wrong...we'll be stopping by later to take your children and any other living creature from your domain. It's plain to see you should not have children or pets.

David, you dear moron, Emma was stating that even her five year old son was smart enough to figure out that Whiskey contains water... a fact which has obviously escaped you. Along with all other common sense. Go have a stiff one and lighten up a bit...

Excuse me, but no one will die after just two days with no food and water. The booze would have done nothing but provide empty non nutricious calories and would have dehydrated him more then if he had no liquids at all. Any water in whiskey is more then made up for by the necessity for the body to use fluids in assimilating the whiskey. Just a stupid story.

I completely agree with Eric. Very stupid story. You're not going to die after 60 hours with no food or drink. The booze did not save his life. Ridiculous commentary. How does he drink out of a bottle, anyway, when he is face down under a sofa?

The story is a crock. He just had to much to drink and passed out and dreamt all up.

You are completely right... It wouldn't have happened in the first place if he wasn't drunk... I'm assuming he was drunk, considering he tripped over a phone cord (which, if he wasn't drunk, means he is a klutz) and he "happened" to have a bottle of whiskey beside him. Lame Lame Lame!!!!!

This story is just a cry for attention from some lonely guy who has nothing better to do with his time. Have you ever tried to drink out of a bottle while stuck somewhere. How did he manage to get the bottle into his hands and bring it to his mouth over and over. If you could do that than why couldn't you crawl outta there or roll.

Umm....sure, we all sit down to have a drink once in a while, but I generally pour mine in the kitchen, don't feel the need to bring the whole dang bottle over to the sofa with me!
