Crime-fighters come in many shapes and sizes, but until now they didn't come in the woman-seeking-woman variety.DC Comics, however, is spotlighting a red-headed lesbian to take over for erstwhile Batman Bruce Wayne -- who suffered apparently fatal injuries in a recent issue of the Batman series.
Batwoman, whose daytime persona is Katherine "Kate" Kane, is described as "lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night," and she's due to star in the series for at least twelve issues, beginning in June. The Batwoman character was first introduced in 1956 as a possible love interest for Batman. She didn't come out as a lesbian until 2006, after it was revealed that she was the ex-lover of a female police detective.
Given the predominantly male readership of comic books, we wonder what factors played into DC's decision to put Batwoman in the lead.
Questions Raised: Is the sexual orientation of comic book heroes relevant? Will this effort for diversification lead to different stories that straight-male Batman couldn't provide?
While we've never been huge fans of Batwoman, can you blame us for wondering what a story line like this would be like in the Wonder Woman series?

The comic medium is form of character dependent story telling. Of course, the sexual orientation of the lead opens up new avenues to explore in the plot. The far more interesting questions are how does it interact character, artist and reader.

What D.C. could've made a completely new character as a lesbian. Yes, children read these but there's implied sex in the Bruce Wayne Batman as well, also there's thugs attacking women looking to have "fun" in there, implying rape, so it's not like it's super-innocent with Bruce Wayne as the Bat. I think this is a horrible idea, don't get me wrong but I think it's good for the next generation of lesbians to look up to, as well.

Why nowadays does everything need to have an african amercian, gay,or lesbian in it?I am so sick of this.If the gay community wants a superhero let them make their own damn comics.I am disgusted that things i loved growing up are being ruined by political correctness. For example,Micheal Clark Duncan as Kingpin in the DareDevil movie.Need i say more?

Duncan is a great actor and his huge persona was perfect for the kingpin role. He is one of my favorite actors period.
Clearly the sexual orientation of Batwoman is a response to the increased interest in Japanese Manga, which often has lesbian characters, and the age of comic book readers which has gone from six year olds to young men in thier late teens to early twentys.

I understand that storylines do look crazy when they change the race of a character in a comic book or movie (I agree), but it sounds like you're saying there is something wrong with a black character!!! We were talking homosexuality, not race; you can't compare the two subjects at all!!!

Could it possibly be because most people's ordinary lives have african americans, gays, and lesbians in them?

Lol @ how ignorant you are for actually thinking that THE GAY COMMUNITY FORCED THEM TO MAKE A LESBIAN CHARACTER. Are you serious? No, I'm pretty sure they didn't. That was their own decision, and honestly, what's wrong with that? I mean, it's not like it's a new phenomenon, with gay characters being in comics. (Ivy and Harley?...Batman and Robin? You know they boned behind the scenes. Come on.)
If you guys don't want to read a comic with a homosexual main character, then don't. It's as simple as that. I'm sure there are plenty of other chunks of plot you didn't like before, BUT GOD FORBID. A female character that 'doesn't like the dick' is OBVIOUSLY taking things too far. (Waaah. :'[ )Don't read Batman for 7 issues then. Geez.
And please. Fuck political correctness. And fuck reading comic books to your kids.(@ Scott) If that's your only excuses for not wanting a lesbian super-heroine, then go cry some more behind a bush and jerk off to straight porn or something. I personally think that reading a hot red-headed lezzy kick some baddy-ass is awesome beyond words.
Before I get flamed to hell by a homophobe thinking I'm some butthurt faggot, I'm not, so chill.

Michael Clark Duncan is about the only actor today who is large enough to play the Kingpin. Now, Marvel making Nick Fury a negro is going too far in my opinion. As for a lesbian Batwoman, I say more power to DC for having the nerve to do it.

Frankly, I'd certainly want my children to learn as early as possible that gay people are just like everyone else. What if my child were gay, wouldn't I want him or her to believe that they could be just as heroic as anyone else? Wouldn't I want them to have a role model they could identify with on a personal level? The infusion of more minorities, women, and gays into the media isn't "politically correct." Its just correct.

So what if she is? There are lesbians and transsexuals in the real world too. If anything, I find it deeply satisfying that they're finally moving away from the stereotype and adding some spice to the mix.

I promise, it seems like everything is turning gay!!! Why can't comics just be what they were!!! If there was a gay character, their sexuality was never profound throughout the comic book, but now most things have to show something gay!! That is why the new generations are so messed up!!! Some kids look up to these heroes, and now they see that they're gay, WTF!!!!!

....Good for them, but if they're gonna start putting such blatant fanservice as this in for the guys, the next iteration of Superman had better have him making out with Lex Luthor, or the fangirls are going to have to cry foul...

What, like there are no lesbian comic readers. Phtt. I've never been a huge batman fan, but I might actually pick these issues up. It's nice to have some representation.

This is plasphemy! DC should know better than to do this to the Bat! If they really wanted a lesbian superhero, work with super girl or heck repalce superman, he's a wuss! The real Batman fans will not go for this and see it as an insult to Batman. Not that its an insult to be a female or a lesbian (I know some of you are already trying to twist it into something anti-gay or anti-female) but the bottom line is the most respected and feared hero IS THE BATMAN, you cannot replace that, ever! (I agree with Dave O as well, you dont need diversity in comics...atleast not with those characters that have already been established)

"Plasphemy" implies that it's a blasphemy engendered by Plastic Man. He could take the form of a Lesbian in a Bat Suit, right?!?

M'kay, so they replaced the main character with someone who is a lesbian. Who cares?
The only issue I personally have with this is, why did they replace good ol' Batman with something new and shiny just for men to ogle at? We were perfectly fine with Batman, who was epic. It'll take so many years for this new character to come through as a classic or favorite. It'll probably never even happen. Sure, it's interesting, but this is bound to go downhill.
