Crime-fighters come in many shapes and sizes, but until now they didn't come in the woman-seeking-woman variety.DC Comics, however, is spotlighting a red-headed lesbian to take over for erstwhile Batman Bruce Wayne -- who suffered apparently fatal injuries in a recent issue of the Batman series.
Batwoman, whose daytime persona is Katherine "Kate" Kane, is described as "lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night," and she's due to star in the series for at least twelve issues, beginning in June. The Batwoman character was first introduced in 1956 as a possible love interest for Batman. She didn't come out as a lesbian until 2006, after it was revealed that she was the ex-lover of a female police detective.
Given the predominantly male readership of comic books, we wonder what factors played into DC's decision to put Batwoman in the lead.
Questions Raised: Is the sexual orientation of comic book heroes relevant? Will this effort for diversification lead to different stories that straight-male Batman couldn't provide?
While we've never been huge fans of Batwoman, can you blame us for wondering what a story line like this would be like in the Wonder Woman series?

Batwoman's sexual orientation was never really a big deal in the stories themselves, even when she was first introduced in "52." Her romantic life was handled much in the same way any heterosexual character's would've been; that is, without a hint of exploitation, despite the inescapable fact that she's a buxom, sexy redhead. Still, to take issue with that is about as fair as decrying Aquaman for being unrealistically buff, or for having a perfect, silky blond mane despite spending all of that time in salt water.

I'm a huge fan of comics, and write them myself. One of the stories I'm working on is a lesbian romance short story. Why? Cause there aren't enough lesbian stories out there, dammit! I'm a straight guy, but I've read many mangas which centered around two male characters in love, such as Gravitation and Fake, but out of the hundreds of gay oriented manga, only a handful have two female characters, and most of them SUCK. It's nice to see a lesbian as a main character. I just hope they don't start becoming like Hollywood and thinking that "lesbian" equals "gratuitous lesbian sex scenes". So what if she likes women? It's a great way of saying to the masses "gay people can defend what's right just as much as straight people can." They've done it with black characters, they've done it with female characters, why not do it with gay characters?

This whole world is going to hell. If we do not get back to what we are actually here for this world is going to hell. GOD made man and woman, he did not make man on man or woman on woman. That is why he gave us certain things and he gave women the counterparts. Everything is male and female don't screw it up. A male goes into a womans counter part. GOD did that for a reason, if it was supposed to be the other way then GOD would have made it like that but he didn't for a reason. DOn't screw around with GOD. Homosexuals are not right, it was not meant to be that way if you say it is then you are wrong, that's a fact. GOD destroyed a whole city because they were homosexuals. A woman and a woman can not produce a child as well as a man and a man can't. To have a child you are supposed to enjoy and engage in one of the most precious acts that GOD made. We are here to serve the Lord and obey GOD. No one in their right mind can say that man or man or woman on woman can be good. No one knows how to please a man better then a woman and the same goes for pleasing a woman better then a man and you can't say they do. GOD made it that way so that you can get to know your spouse better and connect on a more intimate level. Now society is so blind and brainwashed that they thing that it is alright. It is called SIN Self.Induldged.Nature. You have to get to know the person better not take the easy way out stop being lazy. Now it's in comic books. This nature is not appropriate or acceptable to GOD and real straight couples. Read Romans 10:9, get your lives right

if there were god wouldn't he love ALL humans no matter what they've done. A.M. if god did exist then would go to hell because all you want to do is hate people for being different. Anyway on the subject of the gay hero, i don't think it matters if a superhero straight/gay.

That's right, say that word over and over again and again. I am sure that it will gain meaning to everyone on the "Internets" sooner or later.
After all there is no possible way that people large communities won't snicker behind your back and look at you like some foaming from the mouth christian fundamentalist.
Nope, in the *slightest*.
In the mean time, I think your comment has lead to MORE people wanting to read batgirl comics.
Ya'know, it is that thumbing their noses at the political/authority/thought oppressing/dogmatic figures.
Like the time that prolifers were boycotting Crispy Creme donuts, For using "Prochoice" in their advertizing campaign for election day.
But alas, I have gone on a tangent.
In the mean time, thank you for re-establishing the right wing christian fundamentalistic stereotype.
Over. A. Comic. Book. Character.

Woman, lesbian, male or whatever. It's weird that they're actually going to replace the main character -- and worse: FILLER ARC!

What's the deal anyway? Batman was gay or at least bisexual. What do you think he made Dick Grayson aka Robin his 'ward'?
Bruce Wayne was a sugar daddy come to life. What young gay male WOULDN'T want to wake up with a handsome older man, eating croissants with fresh cut flower arrangements on the table, being waited on by Alfred.
Don't even get me started on Alfred!
