Yesterday, the New York Post ran a political cartoon, and a lot of people complained that it was really funny. "Funny" meaning "offensive" and "racist," of course. In the cartoon, a police officer has just shot a chimpanzee, while his partner makes a stimulus-bill-related comment. "The cops [in the cartoon] are saying, 'Someone's going to have to write the next stimulus bill,'" said Andrew Rojecki, an associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "Well, who wrote the last stimulus bill? It's Obama and the Democratic Party, but really it's associated with one person -- and that's Obama."
On top of the depiction of assassinating the president, there's the whole African-American-as-a-monkey thing, which we all know is not good. Sean Delonas, the Post's cartoonist, has defended the drawing, saying it suggests that the recently passed stimulus bill is such a mess that it could only have been written by monkeys. But perhaps his biggest mistake was trying to tie some bizarre news-of-the-weird story with politics.
Get a closer look at the cartoon in question and let us know what you think after the jump.

He's been accused of racism before you know. I mean, I dont like sharpton but he has more than a point. It doesnt take a genius to see the racism but you do have to be able to read to understand where the racism stems from. If they would have chose better wording as in a different one altogether this would have been averted. I can only imagine the intelligence of the Post's employees so how could they not see this coming.

Sharpton is always looking for a racism issue. I don't get the post and would have never seen that cartoon, I'm sure many others wouldn't have either. Thanks Sharpton. I will buy the Post today. I'm sure there will be some arrests and maybe a few brawls over this, Sharpton should be held accountable and pay any medical bills or post bail for anyone involved with this protest. What if that was a female chimp or if one of the cartoon cops were black? Hmmmm. I think Sharpton skims papers looking for a racism issue. He has too much time - he should volunteer time teaching people to speak and read English.

Did anyone ever take into consideration that the stimulus bill was a mess and did look like it was written by monkeys? The only thing this paper is guilty of is not thinking about how people could react before printing the cartoon. I am so sick of everyone crying racism over the stupidest little thing, if a mostly black newspaper would have printed a cartoon about Bush with a picture of cops shooting a cracker, people would have laughed, including white people and nothing would have been said about it either way. Every time a white person farts in a black neighborhood, someone comes out screaming "you wouldn't stink up your own neighba hood cracka". Its all a load of BS.

I'm appalled that the race card is always played against anyone NOT black. If you want to look at reality, people, take a look at Michelle Obama. Talk about setting the bar! I noticed last week that she invited students to the White House. Funny -- I didn't see a single Latina, Asian, Hindu, or White kid in the bunch! She spoke to a group of pre-school children -- all BLACK. She addressed a woman's group -- all BLACK! Such a "standard" setter. I wonder how many of her daughters' sleep-overs included any girls of color other than BLACK! Any surprise that she doesn't visit or allow her daughters to visit Barack's family while she's in Hawaii? Talk about the pot calling the kettle! Geez,I'd be surprised if she sat with anyone other than BLACKS at her daughter's basketball game yesterday! The disparity continues.
